Bob Dole has been thinking this for quite some time, and still isn't sure if Bob Dole can express it (or if it's even on-target), but it seems that the NFL's overtime system is a bit silly.

Bob Dole hasn't found the statistics, but it appears that the Raider-49er game yesterday fell into the 5% of OT games that was not won by the toss-winning team on the initial possession.

If Bob Dole's impression is correct, and the toss-winning team does win the game nearly all the time, why not just have a coin toss and declare the team that wins the game winner?

Bob Dole seems to be developing Alzheimers.... http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/wink.gif

The Chiefs always lose the toss so I don't like your idea....now put the pencil back in your hand and go take your medication... http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Agreed Sen. Dole,

They should adopt the college format, of allowing the winner of the coin-toss to choose whether it starts OT on offense or on defense, and allow each team to answer one another's score. There is far too much of an advantage in the pros if you win the coin-toss.

I too want to go the college-type OT under the following conditions:

1. Drive starts at the 40
2. Must go for 2 after TD's.
3. When both teams score team w/ fewer plays needed to score would be declared winner. (If both took same # of plays we go to another OT).
4. NO FIELDGOALS OR 1-POINT PAT'S WILL BE ALLOWED. Kickers would not play ANY factor in OT.<BR>

2 (football) ideas I've had dreams about...

...NFL adopting NCAA overtime structure

and

NCAA adopting that kooky playoff idea

The NCAA being hesitant on the playoff thing is like a modern day television station being hesitant on this whacky color idea.

I would like to see the two teams tied after regulation, play a ten minute overtime period, if still tied, then one more ten minute period..After that...It's a tie!....Joe

I can't remember what game it was, but some time in the past couple of weeks I heard Madden saying that the team that wins the toss actually just wins about 50% of the time. This surprised me, but if it is true I think they should keep the system the way it is. Sudden death OT is fun to watch. Just look at the Oakland - SF game.

I like the NCAA format except for the final score. Call me a purist but I don't like the idea of a close fought defensive battle that ended regulation at 14-14 only to have a final score of 36-30. Maybe they could make a touchdown worth 2 points and a field goal 1. I know it's a bit neurotic, but does anyone else appreciate a good low scoring slugfest?

I like the current system but I would add one more thing. Before the OT cointoss, each head coach should be able to pick one opponent that will then have to take a punch in the stomach from that coach. Not only would this be highly entertaining but it would be highly entertaining, as well.

Couldn't you just see Mariucci squaring off on Janikowski? POW!
