150 Years Ago Today....

Quantrill burned Lawrence.

Some folks don't have a clue about WHY 400 men from Missouri would agree to ride together to Lawrence, in 1863, on a suicide mission. It was NOT about slavery. Rather, it was "payback" for the countless times the Kansas Redlegs (and federal soldiers) rode into Missouri, stealing (jayhawking), burning and killing Missourians.

The final-straw was the killing of the young women locked-up in the Kansas City house (jail). That cowardly act of violence caused the Missouri men to willingly forfeit their lives to pay back every man (and boy) living in Lawrence, KS with their own lives. It was out-of-control.

Private Jedediah Frazod assassinated 10 iceboxes that day.

They were from the state of Misery. Who could blame them for riding out?

I don't know if I'm directly descended from anybody who participated. But I certainly hope I am. :)

Some of my cousins are distantly related to Bloody Bill Anderson.

If this is how "history" is taught in Missouri it's no wonder there are so many unaccredited schools.

Yeah, all those noble freedom fighters from Kansas. They weren't really stealing our shit; they were just storing it for us, until after the war. LMAO

A month prior to the raid, family members of Quantrill's men held as hostages by Unionist forces in a dilapidated and overcrowded Kansas City prison, died when that building collapsed.

Lawrence, Kansas destruction.

Calling for revenge, Quantrill organized a unified partisan raid on Lawrence, Kansas, the center of these Union forces. Coordinating across hundreds of miles, small bands of partisans rode over 300 miles (480*km) to rendezvous on Mount Oread in the early morning hours before the raid. Quantrill's men burned a quarter of the town's buildings, and killed at least 150 men and boys.

One of the main targets of the raid, Abolitionist U.S. Senator Jim Lane, escaped by fleeing into corn fields.

Confederate reaction

The Confederate leadership was appalled by the raid and withdrew even tacit support from the "bushwackers". Following the raid, in the winter of 1863-64, Quantrill led his men behind Confederate lines into Texas. There, their often lawless presence proved an embarrassment to the Confederate command.

Like other arguments based on events over 150 years ago...it's pretty much time to let it go.

No one living participated or was affected and I doubt more than a handful of living people personally knew anyone personally affected.

It's time to move on, Children.

Unless you count the 14 professional sports championships.

It's nice to have major cities.

Actually there is a valuable lesson we can learn from Lawrence. The mayor believed in gun control. All the town's weapons were locked up in the armory. Therefore, when Quantrill rode in, the residents were completely defenseless. And the result was 183 Good Kansans-er, I mean, casualties.
