Matt Davis, QB Southern Methodist

A late add to the 2017 QB class. Intriguing prospect with an interesting journey. His pro day will be huge. Should be a pretty good turnout in terms of team reps at his Pro Day.

Add SMU's Matt Davis to the quarterback pool for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Davis suffered a torn ACL in September that cost him the remainder of the 2016 season, and as of a few days ago, he was still seeking a sixth year of NCAA eligibility. But now, he's decided to enter the draft, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Davis was injured in the Mustangs' season opener against North Texas last year. In his last full season, he completed 183 of 336 passes for 2,263 yards and 16 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2015. He was also an effective rusher for SMU that year, compiling another 761 yards and 10 scores on the ground.

"(Davis is a) Greg Ward-type playmaker; he can make plays with his arm and feet. Like Ward, NFL scouts will have questions about his size and ability to move an NFL-style offense from the pocket," said NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter.

Davis signed to play with Texas A&M out of high school, but transferred to Tyler (Texas) Junior College before re-entering the FBS ranks at SMU.

It's highly unusual for a player to enter the draft this late, but not unprecedented. Roughly a year ago, Iowa's Drew Ott entered the draft in April following an NCAA eligibility battle and went undrafted. If he participates, Davis will get his chance to show NFL scouts his arm at the Mustangs' pro day on March 29.

You're looking at a 3-4 year project there with that kid. And that's if everything goes well with his development.
