Chiefs Alternate History Madden Franchise: Can Joe Montana take KC back to the SB?

Return of Mals: Joe Montana Edition

Downloaded a 1993 NFL Roster updated for Madden 17 last night.

http://i.imgur.com/GbGDRjch.jpg

All teams and players are edited to reflect their 1993 counterparts. Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon and JOE MONTANA are all on this roster along with every other starter AND backup from 1993. This roster is so accurate it has Andre Ware on the Lions. Titans serve as the Oilers, Texans and Jags are full of generic assholes.

Chiefs have Joe, Marcus, DT, Smith, Carter, etc. Whoever did this is a genious and even got the player equipment right. Faces are computer-generated and coaches are wrong, but can't have everything.

http://i.imgur.com/uqb6baDh.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/JXvj541h.jpg

The goal: get the Chiefs back in the SB with Montana at starting QB. Franchise will run until Joe retires. Not allowed to switch QBs.

LET'S DO THIS!

It's FREDDIE Jones, not HUBIE Jones

Because that's the most realistic "Madden" position for him. He lined up at DE and OLB for the Chiefs but it's too hard to scheme that in Madden.

Bowser 02-12-2017 09:08 PM

We ran a base 4-3 at that time. He was called "Falcon" in that defense because he could basically ad lib when he wanted to. He played mostly with his hand on the ground, but he would move up and around from time to time.

The Falcon bullshit wasn't until Gunther. Dave Adolph was DC in 1993.

I think you are probably right about the 4-3, but PFR has the Chiefs in the 3-4 that year. I don't think that's right.

BTW, I plan on taking this at least to 1994. I'm going to trade for Bono to be the backup in the offseason.

Bowser 02-12-2017 09:19 PM

Yeah, good call on Gunther making him the "Falcon". I remember the silly article in the Star about it. Probably written by Teicher.

And I remember our starters on the d-line in that season were indeed Derrick, Neil, Joe Phillips and Dan Saleaumua.

Hammock Parties 02-12-2017 11:16 PM

So I've decided I want this to be as authentic as possible...which means no shotgun plays and no empty sets. I don't think Joe took a single shotgun snap his entire time in KC, and don't recall seeing a lot of empty.

I'm going to create an entirely new playbook of WCO plays. Regular old I-Form, split backs, far, near, 2, 3 and 4 WR singleback formations, strong and weak I.

The CPU won't have this restriction but I will try to pick an appropriate playbook for each team prior to every game. Ain't gonna be no read options.

I only have two WRs worth a shit anyway so...

Other rules:

Not allowed to go for 2
No QB sneaks (I don't ever remember Montana's brittle ass QB sneaking)
If I'm in a critical situation at the end of a game, I will play for the field goal
no ****ing bubble screens

Pitt Gorilla 02-12-2017 11:29 PM

Didn't they have Pellom McDaniels play the Falcon spot when DT was injured? That was really stupid.

My WRs suck. Barnett and Jones can't catch for shit and Davis and Birden don't exactly have Cris Carter hands.

Also, I think after the draft I'm going to edit all the rookies to reflect the real life picks. At least 2-3 rounds and the odd late gem. But they won't go to the same team that drafted them IRL.

IE the first WR off the board will be the first WR that was picked IRL, regardless of which team picks it in the franchise.

Hopefully I get a better '94 rookie class than Greg Hill, Donnell Bennett and Lake Dawson.

I won't. I'll just go by my board. Then after the draft I'll rename/re-rate the first WR off the board, the first RB off the board, etc etc etc.

Perhaps the throws late and over the middle are to be avoided, as are the heaves into double coverage.

How did you get this roster? That's awesome. Keith Cash should be like a 80 overall. Was this before we had Louie Aguiar as punter?

I'd also LOVE to have a Chiefs roster from 2003-2005.

Two of those picks aren't on me.

1. First was a tipped ball.

2. Second was a terrible play by the WR. Look at what he does when the ball is thrown. He's practically just giving it to the DB. It's like Birden stopped.

The third was admittedly a bad read, I thought Mo Lewis was going to follow Birden on the slant instead of dropping back into a zone.

The fourth, well...just chucking it up.

I'm having some issues on offense because it's a brand new playbook and a whole new set of players I'm not used to. I'm not throwing anymore balls intermediate or deep to Birden...he's JAG.

There are tons of custom rosters in the online section of Madden 17. I also grabbed a 2002 roster so after this I'll give that a whirl I think, see if can overcome all the bombs toasty and crispy are going to be giving up.

Not being allowed to use the shotgun formation is a huge game changer, especially when the right side of your line is rookie Will Shields and Ricky ****ing Siglar.

He plays quarterback like Alex Smith. He's always just a tick too slow to let the ball go. For all the 'throw him open!' complaints, he's just as bad about waiting until a guy is a stride or two in the clear to release it.

Look at that completion to Davis to set up the short TD on the slant - pure Alex move. Rolling left for no reason at all and waiting too long to throw while Davis takes two more strides towards a defender who's able to leave his man after running out of real estate. If he lets it go when Davis is even with the safety and 'throws him open' by leading it correctly, Davis has at least another yard or two upfield and may just finish the scoring drive right there.

Clay has turned Joe Montana into a mediocre game manager.

Hammock Parties 02-16-2017 02:57 PM

LMAO

FYI, Shields got beat on that PA pass. That's why I rolled left.

The OL has me a bit gun shy. I'm used to playing with the best OL in the league on my 2022 London Bulldogs.

I ran it on first down and got stuffed. On second down I called a play action rollout and the DE immediately beat my tackle and sacked Montana. On third down Howie Long immediately beat Siglar and almost forced a fumble.

Now add nine ****ing drops to the equation.

This is an OL and WR problem. Not a Clay problem.

Granted, I should not have dropped back on third and ****ing 19 from my own 1.

I'm going conservative with this team from now on. The talent just isn't there compared to what I'm used to. It's ****ing with my play style.

LOL. Toasty and crispy. Sadly it didn't take me any time at all to know exactly who you were referring to.

I need the challenge though. Took me 2 seasons in my All-Madden franchise to get to the point where I'm beating teams 56-3 most games.

They are ****ing terrible. Wade Wilson is hurt and Mike Buck is starting.

Week 6: Saints @ Chiefs

The Chiefs are desperate for a win now.

Spoiler!

DJ's left nut 02-17-2017 05:38 PM

More Clayxcuses.

The defense held the Saints to under 300 yards of total offense and a mere 12 first downs. They can only be asked to do so much when their QB is ignoring the drop zone and throwing high risk, zero reward swing passes to his RBs and/or throwing to the guy crossing into the middle zone instead of the guy running a mirrored route out of said zone.

"BUT MY LIIIIIIIINE!!!!" Sure thing; just keep watching the rush and blaming your teammates instead of staying tall in the pocket and taking the hit to deliver the strike. Or hell, when you have man coverage on the outside vs. an out route, try throwing the ball as your WR is making his break so that you can throw him open.

Or just stand there and get sack/stripped so you can blame a future HoFer for your inability run an offense.

****ing Clark needs a new coach and a new triggerman because this duo ain't winning shit.

No excuses. I played like dog shit. I'm just not used to the new playbook and it's ****ing with me. Though the lack of a running game doesn't help...

It would have been nice if the defense had gotten a stop after I made it 21-10, though. I had found something that worked on offense.

I think I got the next one. SURELY I can beat Jack Trudeau and a terrible Colts team.

I dont think Allen is getting enough carries, just like down at the goal line after the DT fumble return... 1 chance for Marcus Allen?

That was a brain fart on my part. CPU was in hurry up and I hit the wrong button and got caught blitzing two guys.

In any case, none of those turnovers were my fault. Nor was the onside kick.

I got robbed.

Also, this is about as sim as it gets. I'm not even running shotgun formations. You think I'm back there throwing lobs every play? Hell no. ****, if I get five yards on a fullback dive I'm thrilled.

Pasta Little Brioni 02-18-2017 03:17 PM

Use crossing routes and your all purpose RB for petes sake. Get the ball out fast. That's the offense. **** the QB fumbles though. Broken ass game. I usually got sacked about once maybe twice a game, but nine times outta 10 it's a damn fumble.

Hammock Parties 02-18-2017 03:23 PM

Crossing routes are a large part of my offense. As is getting Allen the ball, he is 2nd on the team in catches. I run mostly a short passing game with intermediate and deep shots off play action.

My play calling is fine, talent is an issue though.

Defense has some holes. None of the linebackers can cover. Nickel corner is weak. In reality the 93 Chiefs weren't all that on defense. They were 14th in points allowed.

Do you even realize that they replaced half the starters the next season? Lewis, Rogers, Marts, Bayless and Ross were all gone in 94. I need to find a Mark Collins bad in the offseason.

They're still ranked in the top 10 so get ****ed. This team is going to the playoffs now that I've got a handle on the playbook.

Points ranking is skewed due to turnovers and late game short-field scores after I went for it on 4th down.

Defense stepped up big time in the last two wins.

You'll see. You'll all see.
