I'm now more sure than ever that Geno's going #1 overall.

From the free agency megathread:

Quote:

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 28s

The Raiders are signing QB Seneca Wallace after working him out, Tyler Thigpen and perhaps others
The Raiders are signing up so many QBs that it is now virtually impossible they would take Geno Smith, even if he was available at #3 overall.

And they'd be theoretically passing on him for Seneca Wallace, Terrell (sp?) Pryor and maybe even Tyler ****ing Thigpen.

What's far more likely, is what some of us already suspect: they're not passing on him at all.

Like all of the QB-specific movement that immediately pre-dated the Geno visit in KC, I think the worst kept secret behind the closed doors of GM offices across the league is that Geno Smith is officially off the board at #1 overall.

I personally think it is down to the Eagles and the Jaguars. The Eagles want Geno as a developmental guy behind Vick, and the Jags, who are largely believed to like Geno, don't want to get jumped, a la Browns with Trent Richardson last year.

And then there's the least likely option, but one I think is still somehow alive: that the Chiefs actually think Geno fits what they're trying to do, and can be special, and that they will take Geno #1 overall if the compensation they are offered for trading down isn't sexy enough.

I may have my head up my ass, as I so often do. But I think the reasonable assumption to make from here on out that Geno Smith is known league-wide to be the first overall pick. The league almost certainly knows who the players for that pick are. And I'm willing to bet the league almost certainly assumes the Chiefs are not in the running for Geno. There has been absolutely no smoke for that particular fire to be real.

As Direckshun suggested, Eagles/Jaguars.

That was not a real tweet, just saying I'm waiting for that to happen...hoping.

Direckshun 04-10-2013 03:48 PM

My guess is the Eagles want to move up.

The Jags don't, but they don't want to get jumped so they're being dragged into bidding against Philly.

That's a delicate courtship for the Chiefs, by the way. The Eagles need to keep up pressure for that #1 pick. The second they lose interest and bail out of the bidding, the Jags will just shrug and stay at 2.

B14ckmon 04-10-2013 04:06 PM

No one is trading up for Geno. Sorry. Definitely not the Eagles, and absolutely not the Jaguars. We are wanting to trade down not up.

Why would you think that teams want to trade up when the top of the draft is weak?

No team is envious of the Chiefs right now.

We are cursed. We finally get a chance at a #1 QB and there isn't one.

CoMo kinda did it for me, personally.

The Raiders signing Seneca Wallace doesn't mean jack shit whether they draft a QB IMO.

RealSNR 04-10-2013 04:32 PM

There's no QB available at #1 if you're a ****ing pussy who isn't willing to risk a measly 1st rounder to achieve real greatness.

And guess what? That's the case nearly every ****ing draft year. There's an Andrew Luck available to draft probably once every 10 years if that.

God, I so want to go in a time machine to 1989 so I can snuff Andrew Luck out at the source. Just so people will stop bitching that he's not available in 2013.

Good teams do the smart thing. Great teams get lucky and stupidly walk into the smart thing. And sometimes you have to create your own luck.

The Chiefs are in that last position. If they're willing to pull the trigger, who knows how good they could be? Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen.

I guess I better get used to loving 9-7 football, KC Wolf, Arrowhead flyovers, and the best-smelling parking lot in the league.

Yes but before it was all of them. Now about 1/4 of all mock drafts have us taking Fisher.

We dont need a ****ing o lineman. We were the 12th best o line last year. Would be top 10 possibly 5-7 range with a good qb. We got one. Replacing Albert with Joeckel or any OT will set us back and not in a win now mode.

I don't want an OL-man either. Although we released Winston, so unless they start Stephenson at RT, we have hole to fill.

I agree with him on this one though. Nobody is gonna trade up to get Geno. Certainly nobody is going to trade up to the #1 pick for him. I'd be completely shocked.

That said, if someone did want to trade up to #1, I'd love for us to trade down, assuming we aren't getting Geno for ourselves. I'm just not crazy at all about Fisher or Joeckel. Which is pretty much how most every other Chiefs fan here feels.

I believe the best players in this draft are likely gonna come after the top 5 picks.

The Raiders are too goddamned stupid to be interested in Geno. They like their draft QB's fat, stupid, and guaranteed to bust. Geno is too sizzle hot for a shithouse, lowlife fanbase like that. Geno is a cerebral man, as sure to be seen perusing the Nelson on Saturday as he is throwing touchdowns in red and gold on Sunday. When Boulevard creates a new ale, they come to Geno for creative names. When Ollie Gates sauces a rib, he calls Geno for proper brush technique. These are not the attributes of a man would call the cesspool of Oakland "home". Sweet Dick has spoken.

It'll be interesting to see how any trades play out. There is more than one option that is very close at pretty much every position. I could see some team in the position to win now seeing someone they like say between 5-15. I just can't see anyone trading multiple picks, future 1st rounders, etc to get anybody in the top spots this year. Who knows....

Try this one on for size. From what I have seen, Geno was to visit the Jets. Let's say the Jets were impressed enough to want Geno, but fear Jax is going to make the pick if we pass. Jets move Revis to Tampa for the #13 pick (and some more), but package the #9 and #13 pick to move to the top of the draft.
