For rookie safety Sanders Commings, a rookie fifth-round pick who has been on the Chiefs’ short-term injured reserve list because of a broken collarbone, a return to game action can’t come soon enough.
“I am ready to get that first pop,” said Commings, who returned to practice Wednesday. “I haven’t hit anybody since my last game at Georgia, so I’m definitely ready to hit somebody.
Commings, who is listed as 6 feet and 223 pounds, said he played cornerback at Georgia but also has some experience as a safety and a nickel back. The Chiefs would need to release somebody to make room for him on the 53-man roster, but they have three weeks to do that.
“I think I could definitely step in and help the team,” Commings said. “Like I said, these vets around here and coaches have helped me stay on my game from the mental aspect. The strength coach is doing a good job of helping me get in shape so if I do get the call, I’ll be ready.”
Commings, who finished his senior year at Georgia with 51 tackles and three interceptions, obviously is eager to contribute to a defense that has powered the Chiefs to a 6-0 record.
“We want to lead the league in every stat,” Commings said. “That’s not just our defense, our offense wants to do the same as well as special teams. We feel like this Chiefs team should be the best and there’s no reason we shouldn’t win the Super Bowl.”
