Obligatory compensatory picks conversation.

Brandon Carr signed with the Cowboys for five years, worth a reported $50.1 million. We replaced him with Stanford Routt for half that, but my understanding is that we signed Routt so fast, he did not count as an offset to Carr. Is that right?

Kyle Orton signed with the Cowboys for three years, $10.50 million. We replaced him with Brady Quinn, 1 year deal for basically nothing.

Barry Richardson signed a 1 year, $1.02 million contract with the Rams. We replaced him with Winston but I don't think Winston counts either since we signed him so quick?

Help me out here. What do you estimate the Chiefs ending up with in terms of compensatory picks?

Routt and Winston were released by their teams so they don't count in the comp. pick determination. Only players gained/lost due to free agency factor in.

Does the Quinn signing offset Orton?

I'll admit I am not intimately familiar with how this works.

The formula is proprietary so no one really knows exactly how it works. From what I understand salary and playing time are the main considerations. Not every FA gain/loss is compensated, either. My guess is that neither Quinn nor Orton are worthy of consideration either way. We'll likely get a (high) pick for Carr and that's it.

I think that is correct. The Carr pick should be a nice one.

Barry Richardson may have gotten enough playtime to warrant a late pick.
