This game has been out 1-2 years, not sure exactly. But I just started playing this 2 weeks ago because my friend kept telling me to download it and try it.
I gotta say, this is my new favorite game. It's a competitive game, you play either 3v3 or 5v5 versus other people in a game that is a Tower Defense game, but you have ARPG characters or champions and it also has RTS elements to it.
I love it, it's really good and it's free! It's also the most popular game in the world right now. People play this game professionally in MLG type stuff.
I highly suggest you check this game out if you are into that type of stuff. If you like games like Diablo, Torchlight, robo defense and Starcraft you will really dig this game.
It's all online multiplayer, that's it. You start off playing unranked games until you reach level 30, which takes a long long time. But it counts your wins, gives you XP and influence points.
The coolest part is there are like 100 champions you can pick, surely you can find one with your play style. They offer like 7 or 8 free champions each week and it changes so you can always try out new characters. They are constantly updating this game, adding new characters, skins, etc. You also have a torchlight-like mastery build system, 1 point per level to put towards your masteries.

But the goal of the game is to destroy the other teams tower and then their nexus. While you have minions to help you attack and you farm them, there are jungles where you kill standing NPC's for gold and you get lots of gold everytime you kill another player. Gold is the most important aspect of this game, there is a merchant where you buy gear for your champion and you have to know ahead of time what to buy. What I do is go to mobafire.com and find builds for the character you intend to play with and write it all down and you follow that build order for your champ so it can become strong and kill the other team. Falling behind in kills is bad, that means your opponent will have more gold and become much stronger than you,
It takes forever to get to level 30 and there is a high learning curve with this game. So skill and knowledge matter a lot. But at level 1, everybody is a noob. I'm only level 13 after 2 weeks of playing this a lot. So it's gonna be a while to get to the ranked games and I guess those are very very competitive.
You can buy characters with influence that you earn through playing the game. You don't have to spend any money, thats just for the impatient or for skins. It's better to stick with one character that fits your play style. Tank, range, melee, support, heal, etc. Once you accumulate enough influence points, you then purchase the character you want with them, otherwise you can only choose the 10 characters they unlock each week, but it changes every week and it's best to try to master a main character.
But this game is sick! It's fun, competitive and I wish I would have started earlier.
