The total cost to GM will depend on the number of customers claiming damages, but the plaintiffs’ attorneys estimate the settlement could cover up to 20 million initial and secondary buyers of GM vehicles that used Dex-Cool. They also say the price tag could reach the hundreds of millions of dollars.
A California state court gave preliminary approval to the settlement last week and a Missouri court plans to consider it today.<object classid="CLSID<img src=" images="" smilies="" big-grin.gif="" alt="" title="1grin" smilieid="76" class="inlineimg" border="0"> </object>

I had a 1998 Pontiac Transport (Montana) with problems because of this Dexcool crap. Spent at least $3000 to get the whole bottom half of my engine redone due to the damages caused by that stuff. GM can burn in Hell for all I care!! :cuss: So glad I got rid of that headache.

My intake gaskets need to be replaced as we speak. I was thinking about trading it in, I guess I'll get it done if GM pays part of the bill.

My cousin is a mechanic at the Nissan dealership in Lawrence. I had him do all the work on my van but I still paid the dealership's hourly rate to have a the intake, camshaft, water pump, and some other stuff that was damaged. This was about 3-4 years ago.

Anyhoo, he said that Dex-cool was supposed to be a 100,000 mile antifreeze. The problem is that it is corrosive. Over time, it eats gaskets, hoses, etc. That is what happened to mine. If the intake manifold gasket is breached, the antifreeze gets into your engine oil. That is very, very bad.

BTW, before I even knew how much damaged, I had taken the vehicle in to another mechanic I knew. He told me the same thing about Dex-cool. It is corrosive and eats hoses, gaskets, etc. After I had my cousin do the bottom engine rebuild, I had the system power flushed(at my cousin's suggestion) and filled with the old polypropyl (the regular green antifreeze) stuff.

And the death spiral continues...

NATIONWIDE SETTLEMENT REACHED IN GM/DEX-COOL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

On March 20, 2008, the California Superior Court granted preliminary approval to the class action settlement reached with General Motors in the GM/Dex-Cool class action lawsuit. This settlement affects people who purchased or leased a "covered vehicle" anywhere in the United States other than Missouri. A separate settlement has been reached for those who purchased or leased their vehicle in Missouri, which will offer the same benefits but will be separately approved by a Missouri court.
The lawsuits were filed on behalf of owners of General Motors vehicles, which were factory-filled with "Dex-Cool" coolant. In summary, the lawsuits alleged that Dex-Cool degraded certain vehicles’ intake manifold gaskets and other engine sealability components, and that in certain other vehicles, Dex-Cool formed a rusty sludge, clogging the vehicles’ cooling systems and causing vehicles to overheat.

GM was counting on the fact that none of their cars could last for 100,000 miles back then.

I assume it is. All the more reason why I vowed to never buy another GM. It's not just little wear and tear things that go bad. It's bad engineering and design. That is what pisses me off about that shitty company.

Man, I need to find out if I'm going to get paid. I filled out some paperwork awhile back, but I have never heard anything.

Its pretty much everything. The interior finish, the exterior paints....it all pales in comparison to foriegn cars.

GM screams cheap.

Yeah, but their retirees (and a handful of upper management that parachuted away) have been taken care of.

What's a little corrosion between friends?
