Godzilla stomping back to theaters
Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary
By Ace Fernandez Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape. Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan. Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project. The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year. But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences. The new film is shooting for a 2012 release. "Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has." Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known." The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday. |
This has been done to death already. Not really sure what more they could do that we haven't seen already.
|
next.
|
They're going to have American actors with poorly dubbed Japanese voice overs. And subtitles.

Wait a minute - that's a great idea! |
Quote:
|
Well they can start by keeping the classic Godzilla look instead of Emmerich's poor redesign.
|
Quote:
Plus, the American Godzilla was a huge pussy. If they're smart, they'll just remake the original Godzilla, or remake one of the classics like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, or Godzilla vs King Ghidra. Those would rock with 2010 effects. |
Go go Godzilla-love that shit!!
|
Is Gadzooky going to be in it?
|
Maybe it'll be Godzilla vs Cloverfield.

The Sci-Fi and Horror genres have gone beyond B-movie stank at this point. If you're going to get campy, cheesy CGI, and horrible dialogue you might as well go go Godzilla. Honestly, the best move EVAR would incorporate Godzilla, porn, Bruce Campbell, Samuel L. Jackson, and midgets with flaming swords... |
Godzilla Unleashed By Warner Bros For May 16, 2014
By MIKE FLEMING Thursday September 13, 2012 @ 6:33pm PDT BREAKING: Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have set their reboot on the Godzilla franchise for May 16, 2014. And it will be in 3D. The move was made by studio domestic distribution president Dan Fellman international distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, along with Legendary Pictures. The film got a rousing reception at Comic-Con in San Diego over the summer. The Gareth Edwards-directed film is being made in partnership with rights owner Toho. Godzilla has appeared in more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros. Warner Bros will release it worldwide except in Japan, where Toho will release it. Edwards previously directed Monsters, and here will be helming a script by David Callaham (The Expendables films), David S. Goyer (the Dark Knight trilogy) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce, along with Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira. |

Here's my idea for a Godzilla reboot...(as it needs a little something different this go 'round).
1) Let Trey and Matt from South Park write and direct it 2) Have all actors, locations, and Godzilla be puppets - as they did Team America 3) Let Trey do all the Kim Jong-Ill type of voices Godzilla as a (intended) comedy - might be on to something here.........Hmmmm |
If I want to watch Godzilla, I'll watch it.
Godzilla just wasn't meant for the CG era. He's a staple of a time gone by.... |

Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston circling 'Godzilla'
Legendary reboot awaiting script revision; Gareth Edwards to helm By JUSTIN KROLL While Legendary Pictures awaits a Frank Darabont rewrite on its "Godzilla" script, the studio continues to assemble its cast, entering talks with Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston to co-star. Aaron Johnson is also in talks. Sources stress that no deals will be done until the finished script materializes. Gareth Edwards is directing with Warner Bros. distributing. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce along with Mary Parent, who helped produce "Pacific Rim" for Legendary. Character descriptions, along with other plot details, are under wraps for now. Pic will bow May 16, 2014, with production expected to start next month. Awaiting a rewrite, Legendary found it important to lock in its leads to make its March start time. Best known for her breakout role in the 2011 Sundance pic "Martha Marcy May Marlene," the Gersh-repped Olsen has largely stuck to her indie roots with roles in "Kill Your Darlings" and "Liberal Arts." She does have FilmDistrict's remake of "Oldboy" set to bow later this year, but "Godzilla" would mark her first tentpole feature. Olsen had been on the lookout for a franchise pic with Paramount showing interest for her on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot and testing for "Captain America: Winter Soldier," for a role that eventually went to Emily VanCamp. With "Breaking Bad" going into its final season, Cranston's schedule should be opening up for more film roles. The UTA-repped actor was able to squeeze in Sony's "Total Recall" and Warner Bros.' "Argo" while also filming a 16-episode season of the AMC show. |

'Godzilla': Ken Watanabe Joins Cast as Production Gets Underway
Principal photography on the Warner Bros. project, due out May 16, 2014, kicked off Monday in Vancouver. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced Monday that principal photography has begun on next year's 3D tentpole, Godzilla, in Vancouver. It was also announced that Inception actor Ken Watanabe has joined the cast, which already includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. Details about the storyline and characters are being kept under wraps, but as The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, Olsen will play Johnson’s girlfriend and Cranston will play his stepfather. Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callahan, with Mary Parent, Brian Rogers and Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni producing. Godzilla is due to hit theaters on May 16, 2014. |
