He has had some significant injury issues he has been playing through. Not surprised.

I reported this previously on the board - he's been telling friends this since about week 3. His wife wants him out of football and Liljas dad died young of a heart attack at 42 so it's time

Kudos to the dude for filling in at center but he was done two years ago. Go play golf.

ChiTown 12-31-2012 01:27 PM

Good dude, and a versatile player. I wish him all the best.

Rain Man 12-31-2012 01:28 PM

I always hate to see Chiefs retire, because I'd prefer they come back for depth or a starting job. More competition is always better. That said, I don't see Lilja having a starting job next year, so if he's really a competitor he may not want to be a backup.

It would be easy to hate on the guy after this season, but its good that he's calling it quits.

His life and family are far more important in the long run. He needs to shed some pounds and take it easy..

QuikSsurfer 12-31-2012 01:30 PM

Can anyone post the gif of him getting absolutely blown up? I believe it was on a fumble or INT return. Just.... just one last time.

Knee and back issues have been his undoing for a long time. Honestly, he should have been out of the League two years ago, but he's been keeping it together with baling wire.

What is sad, being he was in such shitty physical shape, is that the Chiefs didn't have enough depth to replace him. That said, the kid is tough as nails. Kudos to him for playing as long as he did.

RealSNR 12-31-2012 01:35 PM

Have a nice life, Ryan.

Yeah.

2012- 14.5
2011 - 6.8
2010 - 12.6

The guy was a very consistently good player when he wasn't playing Oakland.

Lilja retiring

Ryan Lilja will retire, ending 9-year NFL career

By Joel Thorman on Dec 31, 1:18p 61

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The 31-year old offensive lineman called it a career, saying he's unlikely to reconsider.
Facebook
Twitter

Ryan Lilja's NFL career will end where it began, right in Kansas City. Lilja told the Kansas City media on Monday that he has decided to retire, ending his eight-year career.

Lilja had been on the injury report almost every week down the stretch of the season. It's no surprise that he was hurting.

This has to be the toughest season of Lilja's career. Not only were the Chiefs horrible, but the starting center, Rodney Hudson, went down earlier in the season, forcing Lilja to play center for the first time in his NFL career. And, you know what, he actually did a pretty good job, earning strong grades.

Lilja's NFL career started in Kansas City back in 2004 as an undrafted free agent. He's from Kansas City and went to K-State, so he was a local boy.

He left Kansas City and went to the Indianapolis Colts, where he was a guard for one of the best stretch of offense in NFL history behind Peyton Manning.

In 2010, Lilja was a surprise cut by the Colts and he returned to Kansas City, where he played the last three seasons.

Lilja is 31 years old.

I always liked him. He was a professional, and spoke to the media after games. He was honest, too, telling you straight up when he screwed something up (like the snap at the goal line against Baltimore).

The Chiefs will now need a new starting guard.

So long, Ryan Lilja.

He is finally having that sex change operation he has been thinking about for over a year now. Probably will not change his mind later because he feels he will not fit in , in the locker room any longer.

Ryan was a fine player and a good guy. I know him and his wife, they are really nice people. And they choose to live here. Wish them all the best.

JCharles1981 01-01-2013 06:19 AM

This doesn't surprise me. He wasn't that great of a Center for the Chiefs anyway. I miss Casey Weigmann already.

WilliamTheIrish 01-02-2013 11:13 AM

It's too bad the way his career ended. The guy was part of the OLIne in 2003 Big XII CCG that destroyed OU's DLine all f'ing night to the sweet tune of 35-7 when Sproles ran for almost 300 yards. His career path took such a great turn when Dick/Carl tried to sneak him through waivers onto the practice squad in 04. The Colts pick him up, he helps anchor their line and plays in two SB's.

Good on him.

Well they both grew up and went to high school here. It's not like they have ties to Florida, but fell in love with KC. Ryan's mom lives here and he is quite close to her.
