HOW TO REMOVE THE SONY DRM

HOW TO REMOVE THE SONY DRM ROOTKIT..........Sony's controversial hidden rootkit automatically loads into your machine when you put a newer Sony music CD in your computer. The software will break your computer if you try to delete it, uses 2%-3% of your CPU overhead at all times (whether you're playing the disk or not), and creates a vulnerability allowing others to install permanently cloaked (hidden) files and programs on your machine. Here's the lowdown on the rootkit: SysInternals. Our "Go There" link below is for a complete uninstall of the rootkit, available only by submitting a form to Sony. A partial solution is also available, but it only removes the cloaking, which is obviously not a complete cure for the offensive elements of this malware, but is available for direct download. This link leads to the software to remove the cloaking.....(free).....GO THERE!

that is ****ed up...I'm going to go steal some music just to even out the Karma....

That 'plug and play device manager' stuff is messed up. At least call your software what it is if you're going to shove it in the inner recesses of my PC

htismaqe 11-03-2005 11:37 AM

It's being used to cheat at World of Warcraft.

Spyware and viruses are next.

yea for backdoor **** you in the ass DRM!

Funny thing is this doesn't get the people that download (or upload) the music for free. It's a peice of cake to crack this DRM for ripping the songs. It's just the legitimate customers who bought the Cd and unknowingly turned over their PC to Sony that are getting screwed by this.

Read that article I posted.

People are already hiding World of Warcraft trainers in the hidden directory used by the Sony DRM software. The WoW anti-cheating scan can't see them...

Undetectable spyware is next.

Makes me glad that the last music CD i ever bought was 6 years ago.

And no, i'm not a big dowloader of music either.

It's crap like this, and music companies suing people, that pushes me away from ever buying any more music as long as I live.

I hope Sony get sued out the wazoo. Hopefully they tick off a big company along the way so they really get to slug it out in court.

When will these companies realise that pissing off your customers isn't the best policy.

Here's my EULA to these companies:

1) You do not get to install anything on MY computer without MY permission. Till the day you actually pay me for my computer, and/or lease said computer from me, you do not get free reign on it.

2) I paid for your product, you didn't not give it to me for free. I decide what I do with it in my OWN home on my OWN computer and/or devices. There is no such thing as a limit to me.

3) I WILL bypass any and all copy protection that I deem to be an inconvience to ME. I don't care what law is put into effect, by corrupt politicians, or your idoitic 56 page EULA full of legalese says. I use the media as I see fit, and no one else. If that means I strip or crack away your useless copy protection then so be it. I have legal right to make back up copies, and I don't remember signing anything that says you own my computer.

4) I am a customer of yours, not a felon. Treat me that way.

5) Greed is not good. It's one thing to make a profit, it's another to try and suck every last penny out of your customers. You are vampires to me. I give a crap about me, not your shareholders. I'm sure they can do just fine with the money you can bring in legally. Do not sell me inferior products and expect me to be happy with it. Do not kill promising technology, by pounding on the creators until you can buy it off their smoking corpses and hide it away, while still feeding us a buch of inferior products. (Creative I'm looking your direction).

I'm sure I can go on and on....

Unfreakinbelieveable. Stupid Sony. Did they really think this was going to go on undetected? There are too many computer saavy people out there to just slip this one under the radar.

Mark from http://www.sysinternals.com is freaking awsome, that guy knows his shit. It would have taken me weeks to figure out there was rootkit behavior going on.

And anyone even remotly involved with Windows Security, there are about 5 progs in his article that I now have in my bag of tricks.

Anyway, little follow up article to this:

Interesting stuff. It's good to see that some artist are pissed about this crap. A company pulling junk like this is only going to make more people do illegal copying, IMO.

In case anyone used the Sony rootkit removal tool...

Sony's Uninstaller Is Worse than Its DRM

http://www.security.ithub.com/articl.../165408_1.aspx

Nice. They remove a rootkit, and add a boatload of new vulnerabilities to your machine with a custom script.

SLAG 11-30-2005 05:50 PM

what's the name of the DRM process?
