Kershaw lands 7 years and $215 million

The*Los Angeles Dodgers*and*Clayton Kershaw*have agreed on a seven-year, $215 million deal, sources with knowledge of the situation said.

Kershaw has an out clause after five years.

It is the richest deal for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history, eclipsing the seven-year, $180 million contract Detroit gave*Justin Verlander*last winter, and his average annual salary of $30.7 million is the highest ever for any baseball player.

The 25-year-old Kershaw has won two of the last three National League Cy Young Awards, as well as a Roberto Clemente award for his charitable work.

Kershaw and his wife, Ellen, founded an orphanage in the African nation of Zambia called Hope's Home that they visit every offseason. They co-wrote a book about their experiences last winter titled, "Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself."

Kershaw went 16-9 with a 1.83 ERA and 232 strikeouts last season, his sixth with the Dodgers. The left-hander has a 2.60 career ERA and recorded at least 212 strikeouts in each of the past four seasons.

Wow thats cheap. They have a $2 BILLION TV contract. He should have got more.

MIAdragon 01-15-2014 08:43 PM

30 mil a season holy shit.

Prince22 01-15-2014 08:48 PM

I thought he'd get more considering the $ L.A. can spend + his youth and potential. With that said.... $30mil Wtf has sports come to?

The Franchise 01-15-2014 08:50 PM

Reportedly that had offered him $300 million but i think it was a a longer deal.

Crazy, he's a great pitcher but one bad injury and he could be done. Too risky even though LA can afford it.

Individual players now get yearly salaries close to or above the total yearly salaries paid by the most frugal teams.

Sad day for a Royals fan. Baseball is broken and needs to be fixed. I saw a stat on ESPN that of the 25 highest paid contracts in MLB, the Dodgers have five of them. Zach Greinke is at #7.

Average man won't be able to afford tickets

I'd rather see the Royals in a "second league" below the major markets at this point. It would give them a chance to be competitive. The Royals will never win a pennant. I resigned myself to that a while ago.

Rex needs to have a talk with you

No player in any sport, especially a pitcher who plays every 5th game, is worth $30MM a year.

Just plain dumb.

You're probably right, but I refuse to believe that. Took my family to 5 games at the K last year including opening day and July 3/4. Saw some great baseball and made some amazing memories. The shitty part is that they are in love with they Royals too and "they believe". That's what pisses me off. Even the wifey has bought all in and she was born and raised in Minnesota. Wife was washing dishes tonight when I told her about the signing, and she said maybe Royals can catch lightning in a bottle. Please, please tell me that's not what we are resigned to.

Glad the Royals picked Hochevar over this guy!
