Do you hate Mike Thompson (weathermen)?

I am trying to watch American Idol tonight, and that camera attention grabbing Mike Thompson keeps interupting every 2 minutes to tell me about a storm on the missouri and Iowa border! Seriously, he must have cut in 5 times somtimes talking for like 15 minutes at a time just babbaling about this stupid storm. He even had the balls to cut in at the end so he could screw up the end of the show. I was so pissed. I was so glad the Bachelor was on channel 12 cause Busby is nice enough to flash in accross the bottom instead of cutting in to the show.

Unless it is an emergency, it should be against the law to cut into a show. I just feel they could wait to tell us about a bad widdle thunder storm during their own segment during the news.
I also hate it when they have that storm county tracker on the side of the tv. No sane person could possably know what the hell this thing even is trying to represent, yet it is this annoying blob blocking everything on the right of my TV.

Got me pretty steamed as well.

I wanted to call them and suggest he not cut in the show to tell me "there is a new thunderstorm warning now that is in the Northern area of Kansas". Thanks for the freaking update not leave me alone! he could show some courtesy and just flash it alog the bottom of the screen.
Mike Thompson is the same guy who one night said it was going to be in the 60's and I left for work dressed accordingly. Since I work outside I was pretty cold all day wearing shorts when the high was only 42! I was cussing him the reast of the day!
I do like Brian Busby though. Actually, I like all the other meteorologists except those at fox.

i thought my wife was gonna do an elvis and shoot the poor tv!

then she tried to call the station to "tell that *****er to stfu!", but the line was busy (probably from all the other people calling to tell him to get the hell off the air!!!)...

then i didn't find it so amusing when the dickhead on nbc preempted a big chunk of westwing with more useless weather info... "we HAD pretty bad weather... we ALMOST had a tornado..." who gives a shit?!?!? but just before i got in my car to drive down to the station, they rejoined regularly scheduled programing... lucky for that dambass weather guy!!!

Wow go bo, my wife thought I was insane. I said the same thing. She thought I was nuts for trying to call the station.
I went to school in Springfield and those jerks would play the lady Bears on a thursdaynight at 7:00 and I would miss Seinfeld. I would call the station and tell them not everyone wants to watch the laady Bears, some would like to watch the #1 show in America. They didn't care, they still showed the game. It happened a lot. There are a lot of Seinfeld episodes I never got to see cause those damn bears! What made that worse was they had a couple local SMS stations they could have played those games on. Maybe they had something against Seinfeld.

I totally disagree, it is the first responsibility of a TV station to be responsible to the viewers. I obviously didn't see everything that transpired, but there have been plenty of times here where the local weather people have had to cut into shows. I can't speak of the nature of the storms or how long he was on their air, but if those storms were to gust up and cause damage, injury, or death, that station is going to look pretty stupid and irresponsible for not reporting it. Unfortunately, most people are ignorant when it comes to storms, so that's why the weatherman has to come on the air and go over severe storm procedure and to update what is going on.

Maybe that's just me, but I can think of an instance where we had a tornado outbreak here last fall where people were injured and they cut into programming. It would irk me to know people west and northwest of this area that weren't involved in the outbreak would be pissed because God forbid, they missed an episode of Oprah or something.

I can see if it is a tornado. It has to be ready to touch right by my area though. A thunderstorm? That can be flashed accross the bottom. He even cut in at 7:30 to warn about a thunderstorm warning that lasted until 7:45. Yup, thats right, he came on to warn me about a thunderstorm warning that was going to be over in 15 minutes!

Lightning kills more people every year than tornadoes. Obviously living in the Midwest we're better prepared for severe t-storms than most of the country, but it doesn't mean there's still not a danger there.

it isn't going to effect everyone he interups for. What is wrong with have it scroll across the bottom of the screen? usually you can stick your head out the window and get more right then him anyway.

A "severe thunderstorm" warning doesn't mean all is well and you should be able to go back to "watchin' the Fued!" A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when a storm cell gets to the point where it's strong enough to seriously endanger people, either via wind gusts, large hail, or yes, even tornadoes. It's not indicating a regular old thunderstorm with particularly loud thunder. Severe thunderstorms could just as easily pop out a tornado as those tornado warnings, and it's important to inform people, no matter how terrible it may be for you to miss a big group singalong.

In February of 2000(or '99, I don't remember), during a HUGE outbreak of severe weather, a "severe t'storm warning" was issued for the county I reside in, a little north of Memphis. The town directly to the north of us ended up being hit by a tornado. Thankfully, all that was seriously damaged were a church, a BBQ place, and yes, a trailer park(magnets).

TV shows aren't as important as lives, and while it can get irritating once YOU'RE out of the way, it's probably more irritating being in the crosshairs and not even knowing it's coming.

Ultra Peanut 05-01-2003 12:54 AM

By the way, that's not to say I agree with ALL the decisions they make sometimes.

A "winter storm warning" occupying the bottom of the screen for hours when it's pretty damn apparent to anyone who can look outside is particularly dumb.

JOhn 05-01-2003 12:58 AM

I know I never paid attention to the TV during bad weather. Either watched the radar on the net, or listened to the local radio
