Mock (3/12/13)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs trade Cassel for a 6th round pick.

2. The Chiefs retain Glenn Dorsey.

3. They get one compensatory pick, an extra third (Carr).

4. The Chiefs try furiously to trade down, but there are no takers.

On with the show:

1. OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

Until I see a long-term deal for Albert, I'm certain this is the pick. Sigh.

3. QB Ryan Nassib, Syracuse

I imagine Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, and Mike Glennon go in the 1st. EJ Emanuel and Tyler Bray go in the second.

That leaves Ryan Nassib and Tyler Wilson atop the 3rd for the Chiefs. The Chiefs prefer to go with a natural leader with pretty good decision making and the ability to take care of the ball.

3. OLB Corey Lemonier, Auburn

A 4.60 40 yard dash with 34+" arms? Yes, god. What might spook teams is his mere 5.5 sacks last year, but he was playing on a bad ankle.

4. ILB Nico Johnson, Alabama

Johnson makes too much sense as the sam backer in our defense.

5. C Brian Schwenke, California

I've heard basically zero word on Rodney Hudson. Everybody comes back from a knee differently. I like Luke Patterson a ton as a backup center, but it's clear that the past regime didn't, and this one has zero loyalty to him.

Schwenke's a solid zone-blocker who is still a bit of a work in progress, but I could live with him as a patch for part of 2013 if I had to.

6. TE Joseph Fauria, UCLA

The Chiefs need receiver help at this position. Fauria is 6'7" and a decent route runner.

6. WR Chris Harper, Kansas State

Some depth for a WR unit. There are no really good speedsters here so I just go with the best set of hands.

7. ILB DeVonte Holloman, South Carolina

A really impressive physical specimen, Holloman suffers from being a tweener -- too big to play safety, too small perhaps to play linebacker. Except that this team has zero athleticism behind Derrick Johnson at the ILB position, so he could have a home here.

Seriously...what team is going to take Glennon in the first round? Talk about a pissed off fan base??? I'm not sold on Nassib either.

Nassib is exactly what this franchise targets for its QBs. Safe, mediocre trash.

I don't think Nassib lasts till the 3rd. I think the Bills target him in the 2nd.

This is my favorite of your mocks (rds 3-6), which probably means it's unrealistic.

Well Dorsey's gone and I feel your Cassel projection is a tad optimistic. Moreover, I don't see any way the Chiefs could 'furiously' try to trade down and find no takers, not with the Eagles obvious interest in Smith and the Bills cutting Fitzpatrick.

I will not accept the "we tried but couldn't" excuse this year. It doesn't even begin to pass the sniff test.

Direckshun 03-12-2013 02:54 PM

Right. It seems we're getting DeVito now.

That's fine. I was going off rumors from yesterday on both Dorsey and Cassel.

Which in today's NFL, I might as well be going off rumors from eight years ago.

If I had a time machine back in the fall and caught myself pining for a trade down like I am now, I would have killed myself on the spot. On the ****ing spot.

But now that I am, I think if we've learned one thing about Pioli, it's that "we tried" means "we were open to it if we didn't have to make any sacrifices whatsoever." Everything from acquiring ANY legit QB prospect in four years of drafts to searching for a head coach and offensive coordinator to getting Dwayne Bowe's deal done suggests that the options were ALWAYS available. And I imagine with the thread coming out that a trade down in 2009 WAS possible but not taken by Pioli, it leads me to believe that we could have been so much better off for doing that.

Dorsey signed Bowe for an entirely reasonable amount of money and got Tyson Jackson to STFD and STFU. I'll bet he finds a trade down partner.

I dunno... So far this feels a lot like deja vu.

I didn't know we could get a 6th round pick from an arena league team. Cool!

Direckshun 03-12-2013 04:38 PM

Needless to say, there will be revisions coming.

What? Don't you have Mock (3/13/13) to work on?

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-12-2013 09:00 PM

Best one so far, even if the first two picks would cause a spike in drifter executions.
