Chiefs Thoughts (god forbid) On This Bye Sunday.

Great win at Baltimore. I still feel like I am in this strange place where I have more belief in the defense getting the job when they go on that field more so than the offense. We still have some problems on offense and need to get better. But the problems are very fixable which is nice. First on the list is to knock off the penalties from complete dumbassary. The offensive players (esp Tony) need to focus more on motion and things of that nature. How many illegal motion\movement penalties have we seen from this team? I like how Trent Green has come on with our crapp cast of WR. I think having Kennison back (whenever) that is will be a great thing. I don't think he will put up great numbers but I think it make the Green to Gonzales connection a lot stronger. Something that has left me scratching my head at times with this year's team is how they never really use the screen or swing passes to Holmes anymore. It could be because our WRs can't block as well as last year. Even with that I would like to see it tried a little more on situations like 2nd and short. I think the only issue on defense is health. I saw a huge improvment in tackling and thats what I really liked against Baltimore.

I don't know if I'd go that far. More accurately, for me, it warms my heart that the D can take the field and the dispair isn't immediate. I still have faith in the O, and my faith [and expectations] in the D are steadily imcreasing.
The bye week is nice as it gets us closer to getting Cheek, Kennison, Fujita and Sims back.

I don't not have faith in our offense. I think they will get better...

But when the defense walks out on the field. I generally feel more confident that they will do what they need to more so than the offense.

I can see that confidence in the D when they hold the Ravens to 20 minutes of possession.
I can't see the lack of faith in the O when they possessed for 40.
The O did just fine Monday.

The defense has been looking better.

One thing I had noticed, was that on the postgame shows, and on Matchup if any of you watch that, when we give up the big plays it seems to usually be someone being out of position, which should get better as the year goes on and they spend more time running the defense.

They aren't frightening anymore, they can make some stops, even if they aren't among the league's best. A number of people have been playing well, I think, Warfield for one, Browning for another when he's outside.

They did good. But if we are going to be in the place we want to be they need to be better. I am mostly referring to the chance they had to put the game away late in the 4th by getting a 1st down or 2 and running the clock down. We really need them to be able to do that. The defense had just made a huge stop and then a few plays later they have to be counted on to seal it with another huge stop? Thank god that guy dropped it on 4th down.

The thing that still scares me, is our propensity for our 'little' mistakes to result in maximum damage. The INT return in the Texans game took us from win to loss. The punt return and bootleg fleaflicker made an utterly dominating display a nailbiter.
We need some mechanism to make sure that the little oopsies, if they must exist, don't turn into points on the board and HUGE swings in momentum.

Good point. In the same vein as that I think a big difference from this years offense to last years is that we seem to have a little trouble "pouncing" when other teams make mistakes. I don't have the numbers but it seems like we don't take advantage of turnovers and turn them into as many points as we should.

But like I said I only see this offense getting better.

My main thought this Sunday is how much that Texans loss hurts right now. Not just the loss...that one crap throw by Green (alternatively, you can blame Al Saunders for AGAIN forgetting that we have the best goal-line runner in the NFL)...is likely going to come back to haunt us later in the year if we're able to strings some wins together.

On the other hand, I think the Chiefs can win the next two games. And judging by the way Carolina is playing against Denver right now our loss to them might not be the abberation that I thought it was at first.*

* I reserve the right to edit this comment out if the Broncos are able to overcome Plummer's crap play and win the game.

Agreed..that one throw is gonna come back to haunt us if we make the playoffs...(yes im a believer again) It will probably cost us a home playoff game. But then again, that might not be a bad thing since we dont seem win at home in the playoffs anymore...

If we go on the road and beat Jax the O is officially back. It's performed at a 2003 level the last two weeks (apart from redzone gaffes against Houston).

I am hoping that we don't make the same mistake and get Kennison out there without having worked the timing out. Work him back in slowly and put in the guys that have done the work. We need Morton to show again as he did against Baltimore. I haven't seen that guy since he got here. Maybe he's been reading all the posts about him here.
