Towing a Dodge mini-van?

My father-in-law and I were talking yesterday about our impending trip in his RV up to Vegas. He has decided to rent a car in Vegas rather than tow his mini-van in part because his tow hitch/trailer requires some service.

I asked why he couldn't just tow the thing on it's own wheels... he said that with most (if not all) other makes, the transmission is designed to allow towing on all 4 wheels either as is, or with some kind of modification (putting a pump on to circulate the transmission fluid?).

But that, with Dodges, you can't tow them on all 4's without risking burning out the transmission.

Is that true? What's the story?

Dodges? Towing, driving, parked - the transmission is gonna burn out no matter.

If it's an automatic yes, it shouldn't be towed without raising the front wheels off the ground. That's pretty much true of any automatic I think.

While jAZ has all four wheels on the ground and it isn't pertinent to this point, I believe you are mistaken unless it is a front wheel drive.

A remco pump is usually suggested for towing any automatic transmission drive wheel on the ground, especially front wheel drives.

They run about 500.00 - 700.00 dependent on the model and make

Is there anything about a Dodge transmission that would make such a pump useless on a Dodge? That seems to be what my FIL seems to believe.

Nope, Remco makes a variety of pumps for all makes and models (at least American makes and models)
