ESPN says we tried to trade down at 15 instead of taking DJ...

15(15) Kansas City (7-9)

Derrick Johnson OLB TEXAS

The Chiefs wanted Thomas Davis here and actually tried to trade out of this pick when the Panthers took Davis. But they instead ended Johnsons' free-fall. He had been rated the top defensive player on some draft boards, but he's a classic OLB in a 4-3 scheme, and most teams looking defense earlier in the round were looking for a 3-4 edge rusher.

Sounds like we narrowly avoided disaster. Gunther must have threatened Carl and Dick with bodily harm.

Herzig 04-23-2005 06:20 PM

Yep. Looks like we had all better hold off on kissing Carl's ass...

siberian khatru 04-23-2005 06:20 PM

I thought Carl in the press conference said some teams called them about moving up, and that he knew one of them coveted DJ.

Then again, maybe it's just another blunder by the crew at 1 Arrowhead. They only wanted Davis, didn't want DJ, panicked when they read Chiefs Planet warning them what would happen if they DIDN'T pick DJ and pulled the trigger on a guy they never wanted in the first place.

I know the Chiefs wanted Davis but I don't think they were looking to trade down when you have DJ on the board.... :hmmm:

How do you pass that up? :shake:

He absolutely did say that in the press conference. The message was that they didn't trade down because they knew one of the teams wanted DJ. Of course you'd trade down if you were sure you could get the player you want - DJ - and get another pick.

mcan 04-23-2005 06:27 PM

I doubt we ever seriously wanted out of the 15th spot. However, if people are calling you, why not take their calls and listen to thier offers. Use the clock time to see if you can get value. Maybe you'll trade down two or three spots and STILL get your guy... Unfortunately, anybody wanting to trade up to that spot would have been looking at Johnson anyway, and he was the second best defensive player on our board. Frankly, I think we got a fantastic player, and I really look forward to him hitting the field this pre-season.

Ninjaman 04-23-2005 06:27 PM

Why didn't any of the einstien reporters from KC ask who the Chiefs would have taken if DJ was gone too and the Georgia safety?

If that's the case, then good. ESPN has been known to be FOS.

Of course, we all know Carl lies. He was just covering his ass for not being able to trade down and avoid drafting a guy he absolutely didn't want.

Choose between believing ESPN or Carl? I for one believe neither.

CosmicPal 04-23-2005 06:30 PM

Carl is always looking to wheel and deal. I'm suprised he hasn't traded up into the second round, and I still think it's possible he will.

Hammock Parties 04-23-2005 06:32 PM

Wouldn't that be great if they had a laptop with a net connection open to Chiefsplanet? ROFL

Carl: OK, Dick, we're gonna trade down since Davis is gone.

Vermeil: Ok, let's do it.

Arrowhead lackey: Uh, Mr. Peterson, sir, Chiefsplanet is imploding. They are going nuts over Derrick Johnson.

Carl: Let's draft Derrick Johnson.

Vermeil: But I want a wide receiv-

Carl: SIT THE **** DOWN AND SHUT THE **** UP, DICK.

Gunther: I knew I could count on my internet peeps.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Anyong Bluth 04-23-2005 06:33 PM

Doesn't make sense... we'd have to REALLY trade down or just a few- knowing we could get DJ still.

They may have wanted Davis 1st but I don't buy they we're gonna let that slip.

I'm happy they go DJ he was my 1st choice. I never believed it could happen this way.
