Although it is believed Ty Law is still at least a few weeks away from being able to make hard cuts on his surgically repaired left foot, the 10-year veteran cornerback will work out Thursday for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Law, 31, was released in February by the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots for salary cap injury reasons. Law is scheduled to arrive in Jacksonville on Wednesday to meet with team officials in advance of his audition. It is not yet known how strenuous a workout the Jaguars have planned for him.

A four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, Law recently visited the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins. Several other teams -- including the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers -- maintain interest in Law, who suffered a Lis Franc fracture to his left foot during a loss at Pittsburgh on Oct. 31.

Because of the delicate nature of the bones involved, Lis Franc injuries generally require a lengthy rehabilitation period and, while Law has begun to run, his rehabilitation has not progressed to the point where he has made hard cuts on his foot. Still, the Jaguars want to get an updated assessment of his recovery before most team officials leave for vacation.

Vice president of personnel James Harris acknowledged a few weeks ago that the Jags had some "conversations" in-house about Law.

Jacksonville has an emerging young star at left cornerback, the position Law has played for much of his career, in third-year veteran Rashean Mathis. But the Jaguars, expected to contend for a playoff spot in 2005 and to perhaps challenge the Indianapolis Colts for the AFC South title, remain unsettled at right cornerback.

Dewayne Washington, who started all 16 games at right cornerback in 2004, was released early in the offseason. The Jaguars also jettisoned Juran Bolden, his backup.

Among the candidates at right corner are five-year veteran Kiwaukee Thomas, veteran free agent acquisitions Kenny Wright and Terry Cousin, and rookie Scott Starks, a third-round draft choice from Wisconsin.

Even if Law performs well in the workout, finances could be a stumbling block. Law has indicated that despite the injury, which limited him to seven games last season, he still expects to land a multi-year deal with compensation commensurate to his status as one of the NFL's premier cornerbacks when healthy.

Law holds the Patriots franchise record for interceptions (36), interceptions returned for touchdown (six) and passes defensed (142). The former University of Michigan star, a first-round choice in the 1995 draft, had played his entire career with the Patriots before his late-February release.

Wow. Sign Ty Law. Why didn't we think of that?

I hope he signs with the Jags so people will shut up about him.

The only reason we need another corner is because of the possible Warfield suspension. We need someone who can start week 1, and that person is NOT Ty Law.

Let's NOT mortgage our future on Ty Law. end up in
salary CAP Hell.
