Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
Aug 05, 2005, 10:55:02 AM

TRAINING CAMP

Morning
Q: How was the work after a day off?
DICK VERMEIL: “Like I told them: days off and vacation have one thing in common. They come to an end and you have to go back to work. They did. It took them a little while. It takes a while to get their motors running again, but they did a good job.”

Q: When do you expect Priest to get medical clearance to practice again?
VERMEIL: He’ll practice; he’ll practice this afternoon.”

Q: Keyaron Fox is now playing on the right side at linebacker. How’s that working out?
VERMEIL: “We want him to be able to play both, so he has to work at both. We can’t say what game during the year someone might not be able to play. If he’s not starting he’s got to be able to play more than one spot. We’ll do with some other linebackers as well. But he’s been in the system long enough now and through the off-season program so it’s not confusing to him.”

Q: Derrick Johnson’s been working with the ones almost exclusively today. Is that a depth chart change?
VERMEIL: “He’s needs the work. He needs the work and obviously he has the ability to be up there. The ones get more reps than the twos, so that’s where he is.”

Q: Freddie Mitchell’s back in town today but not practicing.
VERMEIL: “As you know, he elected not to have (knee) scoped. That’s a decision he’s made and he plans to get back faster than he would have if he had it scoped. Only time will tell if the decision is right. It’s risky.”

Q: Who would be your right tackle today if the season began?
VERMEIL: “Our right tackle today would be (Kevin) Sampson. He’s done a good job. You know, there’s no substitute for toughness and determination and he’s got a lot of that. He’s a pretty good football player. All he does is get better.”

Q: Who would be your right guard?
VERMEIL: “Probably John Welbourn.”

Q: Are the days over where you can just not worry about your offensive line?
VERMEIL: “I have a concern about Will Shields getting ready to go but I like what I see. He has a determination and an enthusiasm and confidence. The work he picked up today was more aggressive.”

Q: Have you seen any signs of wear and tear on Willie Roaf?
VERMEIL: “No, I haven’t. In fact, I think working him once a day has helped him. But he’s having, to me, his best camp since I’ve been here.”

Q: Your assessment of the linebackers?
VERMEIL: “They’re doing fine. We’ve only been here a week. I’m pleased with their progress but they haven’t been in a real live scrimmage. We’ll do that against Minnesota.”

Q: How is the progress coming with Shawn Barber and Mike Maslowski?
VERMEIL: “Barber will be on physically unable to perform starting the season. Medically we know it make take another six weeks into the season before he’s really ready to be turned loose.
“Maslowski is questionable, that’s all. His mother went through a by-pass operation so he’s been excused and there right now.”

Q: When will Freddie Mitchell be ready to go?
VERMEIL: “The thing about the National Football League is it doesn’t stop to wait for somebody. It just keeps on going. Freddie and I met yesterday and the sooner he gets back the better opportunity he has to compete. But you can’t be competitive when you’re not on the field.”

No. I think Dick is referring to our 1st pre-season game.

Ahh, that makes sense. I read scrimmage and immediately thought of previous year's scrimmages with Minnesota.

Not too hard to read between the lines when he spoke about the "Sultan of Slot".....

FredEx will make the team... he offers too much reward for such low risk. Even if he doesn't get that much into camp. Plus, he has game experience, which is something a lot of our receivers are sorely lacking. Mitchell has got a ton of talent, and it's VERY possible a change of scenery could do him good. AND, he's out to prove it now, if you ask me.

I'm anxious to see Sampson in action.

I'm anxious to see Delilah in action. :p

I was breaking down game film from the morning practices and came across this:

Hicks is totally out of this play. Ridiculous!

I'm anxious to see the whole team in action. Only 1 week to go. Man, the week can't go by fast enough.

ROFL You're so bad. Heck, Jared Allen is totally out of this play, too. Time for some new DEs.

Not seeing it. His experiences for the most part have been in mediocrity. The Eagles had no threat receivers before they got TO. Mitchell was a 2nd rounder who got every opportunity from them, and did not move on to the next level. I'm not sure he is even good enough in this league to even be an adequate #3.

Umm, correction, Mitchell was a 1st rounder not a 2nd rounder.

I stand corrected, even worse though.
