Did You Know? Kawika Mitchell.....

I was reading my trusty KC Chiefs desktop calendar this morning. It says that while in college at South Florida, Kawika Mitchell was a two-time candidate for the Butkus Award as the nation's top lineback. You know, the same award that our new rookie LB, Derrick Johnson won. I didn't realize that KM was that recognized while in college. I think the kid has got some great talent and hopefully he'll show much more of it this year.

I say, I say it's time the boy showed up and proves it then.

Hmmm, didn't know that. Thanx for telling me. The kid does have talent, I just think he hasn't developed smoothly. My reasoning behind that is, he's been through a lot. He was thrown in as a rookie in 2003 to start 6 games at MLB. He missed a month and a half of TC last year, and lost out on the starting MLB at the beginning of last season. He had to learn from one system to another. Greg to Gun, big jump. 2 different coordinators, 2 different systems, 2 different coaching philosophies on how to play linebacker, top that off with still trying to adjust to the NFL. Finally, I can say at the least, he has a chance to show something with no bumps along the road. Im interested and excited to see Mitchell play this year.

2nd round LB's usually end up starting and have good careers in the NFL.

Then, and only then, will he be as good as Rich Scanlon.

Wow, you need to give it a rest. I have said many times now that KW is ahead of Rich in this stage of the game. KW has had more time logged to understand the scheme than Rich. :D

Do us a favor, let it go.........

Somebody needs to look up the word "reciprocation" in the dictionary. It's right next to "karma".

BTW, FWIW, I think KM does do a better job this year, It was clear to see late last year he was coming around, with better talent around him, he should shine.

I understand Gun's approach. He's not asking KM to be the best player on the field he's just asking him to be able to communicate to his teammates. Isn't that what the MLB does in Guns's scheme? Tell the huddle the play from the sidelines? If Gun doesn't trust him to communicate his instructions to the defense he's sunk. Good move and good coaching Gun!

It goes much deeper than that, calling plays is just part of it, reading at the line and adjusting the players is another. Making tackles helps alot too !

If in fact the light has gone off in KM head, he should shine, it's never been a question on ability, it's always been a mental part of his game that was lacking.

Its not just about calling plays.

its about taking some leadership in the huddle...calling the play, displaing authority...."Alright....its 3&1....bust someone's ass".

Confidence that he KNOWS he can make a big play..that he KNOWS what is supposed to happen and call and make adjustments.....delivered with a mean streak.

Thats what Gun has been talking about....

I am most hopeful he is great this year. Note I said hopeful, not expect. Same with DJ.

Demonpenz 08-08-2005 10:42 AM

don't have to make the big play every 3rd and 1 just make ANY PLAY how many times did the chiefs D just need to make one play on D to win the game only to watch the other team complete third and long 5 straight times
