Interviews set to start Wednesday for Texans job

Interviews for the the Texans head coaching job begin Wednesday when Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan comes to Houston.

Linehan will be interviewed by owner Bob McNair, general manager Charley Casserly and consultant Dan Reeves. Linehan is the first of four NFL assistants who will be interviewed for the job that became available after Dom Capers was fired on Monday.

After Linehan will be Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders on Thursday, Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak on Friday and Buffalo offensive coordinator Jerry Gray on Saturday.

Because Washington assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams signed a three-year contract extension to remain with the Redskins, the Texans have removed him from their list of candidates.

Texans receivers coach Kippy Brown will also be interviewed.

Don't be surprised if Kubiak emerges as the leading candidate and ends up getting the job. Reeves has strongly recommended Kubiak. Reeves coached Kubiak during a nine-year playing career with the Broncos.

Kubiak and Saunders are familiar with the Texans interview process. Before Capers was hired in 2001, they were interviewed by McNair and Casserly, along with Minnesota defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell and former Cleveland coach Butch Davis.

Linehan has been an NFL assistant coach for only four years. Linehan did an outstanding job during his three seasons as Minnesota's offensive coordinator before moving to the Dolphins last season when he helped Miami finish 9-7 in Nick Saban's first season, but his lack of NFL experience could work against him.

Saunders, a former head coach at San Diego, has been in charge of one of the league's best offenses at Kansas City working under Dick Vermeil, who announced his retirement this week. Saunders had one of the NFL's most prolific running games.

After this week's interviews, more candidates are expected to meet next week with McNair, Casserly, Reeves and Cal McNair, the owner's son who is heavily involved in the process.

Sources tell me the Texans are looking to improve the offensive side of the ball.

Can you imagine being the head coach of a team that gets to draft a guy that can not only fly, but can walk on water as well?

My sources tell me that it's becoming painfully obvious Carl has told Saunders he will only get token consideration here.
