Total bummer: Rare Ferrari destroyed in crash
'Like taking a Van Gogh painting and burning it,' says another car owner
Did you know?

Updated: 2:29 p.m. ET Feb. 22, 2006
MALIBU, Calif. - Authorities are investigating the circumstances behind a spectacular crash on Pacific Coast Highway that destroyed a rare Ferrari Enzo estimated to be worth more than $1 million.

The red Ferrari was going at least 100 mph when the driver lost control and struck a power pole, investigators said. The car — one of only 400 made — shattered, with its engine coming to rest on the highway and its wreckage scattered.

Sheriff’s investigators identified the owner as Stefan Ericksson, 44, of Bel Air, who escaped the wreck with only a cut lip.

Authorities said Ericksson told them he was a passenger and the driver was a German acquaintance he knew only as Dietrich, who he said ran into the nearby hills. A three-hour search failed to turn up anyone, and officials said they were skeptical of the account. Only the driver’s side air bag deployed, Brooks said.

“He destroyed one of the finest cars on earth, maybe the finest,” said Ferrari owner Chris Banning, a Beverly Hills writer who is finishing a book on the cult of sports car racing along winding Mulholland Drive.

“It’s like taking a Van Gogh painting and burning it.”

You'd almost have to go to Lloyd's of London to fully insure it. The insurance company I work for wouldnt touch that beast.

I heard that he failed a breathalyzer.

That's not the way I heard this story at all. I heard this guy had the Ferrari up on a jack, in reverse, trying to take the mileage off of it,

got mad at his dad, and kicked the thing off the jack
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2/PDVD_699.jpg
where it promptly took off across the garage, crashed through the large window at the other end
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2/PDVD_714.jpg
and fell to it's demise.

The story actually has other interesting details.

The driver has ties to the Swedish mafia, and was jailed a few years back for money laundering. He got out, founded a video game company (Gizmondo...which failed) and continued to launder money.

Oh, and he was going so fast because he was racing a Mercedes SLR.

Ouch. I've been wanting to tell this story, and this seems like as good of a place as any. I know one of the owners of Bob Allen in KC. He had some GTs in there until recently. Evidently a guy from St. Louis came over and bought one of them for some ridiculous amount.

So the guy is pulling out of Bob Allen onto Metcalf (I believe that's the street) with his brand new GT that he just bought. He decides to get on it as he pulls out of the dealership with his new muscle car, spins around 360 and promptly puts it in the ditch. ROFL

Luckily no damage was done to the car and the guy was able to drive it out with only his ego wounded.

My brother frequents Ferrarichat.com (he has a Spyder F1) and aparently he was partying in Beverly Hills all night and was apparently racing a McLaren Benz and after the car was severed in 1/2 he was able to flee the scene. He later returned to the scene to claim the car and said a friend was driving whose full name was unknown to him. He also blew a .09 which is over the limit...hours after fleeing the scene.

The Enzo is a bad car. I saw 4 lined up at the Ferrari tent at the Concourse De Elegance. My company sponsored the event and saw Sergio Pinninfarini and some other guy with a Ferrari last name debut the new Ferrari with the flip roof pull the cover off the car for the first public viewing.
