true fuck the yankees, but you cant deny rivera is the greatest

CoMoChief 07-16-2006 02:18 PM

He's a major force, but his cutting fastball isnt what it used to be.

Jeff Montgomery > Mariano Rivera :p

He is?? you cant compare closers these days to guys back in the 70's and early 80's. Most closers these days pitch no more than 1 inning at a time. Saves are cheap these days.

Demonpenz 07-16-2006 02:18 PM

I will deny that he is the greatest. Lee Smith was pretty bad ass too. I do like the fact that he has one pitch

CoMoChief 07-16-2006 02:21 PM

Eck was a very good closer too.

NJ Chief Fan 07-16-2006 02:21 PM

his saves come in high pressure situations, he pitches in new york, you know new yorkers will tear into you if ya fugg up, his cutter sure isnt what it once was but he still throws 94-95

Demonpenz 07-16-2006 02:22 PM

yeah he plays in new york which means he always has the best talent around him and he is consistantly put in winable situations. Thats why not only not the best player, i would venture to say he is below a human being.

Hammock Parties 07-16-2006 02:26 PM

Akinori Otsuka is the greatest closer ever.

NJ Chief Fan 07-16-2006 02:30 PM

rivera career save % is .88(400 of 454) with a career 2.33 era

trying to find 1. lee smith 2. trevor hoffman 3. john franco

these are the top save leaders off all time...rivera is 4th

NJ Chief Fan 07-16-2006 02:33 PM

hoffman 460 career saves 52 blown .898 career save %(460 of 512) 2.77 career era....ok he might be better than rivera

Agreed.

He doesn't have a whole lot of tricks up his sleave, just zings it in there with a whole lot of pepper and says "try to hit it".

He's been consistant for many years (in baseball terms) now too.

You can take any of those guys if you want to, but I'll pick Rivera over them to close out my games.
