Adventures In Stupid Personnel Decisions: Glen Mason Gone

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ao...mason-180w.jpgWhoah! The day after Minnesota coughed up a million point lead and ceded the largest comeback victory in the history of bowl games, they fire head coach Glen Mason. In a word: idiocy. Minnesota's athletic department must not remember what the Gopher football program was like pre-Mason. Before his arrival, the Gophers had been bowlless for 12 years. Standard disclaimers of bowl proliferation and nougaty scheduling apply, but Mason took them to seven in eight years and mixed in some genuinely good seasons.

More importantly, Mason's power-running style gave Minnesota an identity other than "doormat." The consistently kicked ass on the ground, often featuring a two-headed back of frightening power and speed: Barber/Tapeh, Barber/Maroney, Maroney/Russell. And though Mason could never put together a defense that wasn't awful, at least Minnesota was competitive. That's no easy task at a recruiting wasteland where you play your games in an antiseptic dome so atmosphere-free that when Iowa won the Big Ten earlier this decade, Iowa fans tore down the goalposts and carried them out of the Metrodome. Whoever they hire next has a 10% chance of being as successful.

In other news, the scramble for Minnesota's OL coach begins.... now!

Uh yeah, we regret a lot of decisions that Roy made for us. Roy was simply waiting for the opportunity to bring in his good bud Terry Allen.

To be fair, alot of good D-1 coaches come from 1-AA, and Allen was highly successful prior to coming to Kansas.
