What advice would you give someone who is applying for supervisory position?

When he has no supervisory experience. I need some buzzwords to throw around. I'd really like to get this job and get some sup/management experience under my belt. It's within the agency i'm in now, so I know I will get an interview, I just need some "helpful hints".

TIA!

Tell him/her who is giving the interview that you have superior ninja skills.

Team building, efficiency, ingenuity, improved performance, timely project completion.

I think those are good starts.

One word: "Synergy"

Be sure to spell it with a 'y' though.

You are skilled at operationalizing team member efficiencies through synergistic collaboration.

Be Proactive instead of reactive, able to meet deadlines, good attitude, yada yada yada.......

Funny note: I once used a Schottenheimer speech in a meeting with admins and staff on team building. It got rave reviews, everyone thought I was this great leader/motivator. Those two little words we and us!!!!! ROFL

This might be a good thread for me to throw out a question.

I need a team building-ice breaker event idea for 150 people. I've got about 90 minutes to get it done. The end result should be that at least most of them have had an opportunity to meet most of the others and gather basic information. which brings me to another suggestion for Sauldo.

Knowledge mapping. Learning who among your staff and contacts knows how to do what....so you can better utilize the skills of your staff.

If they ask you if you miss a lot of work say... I wouldn't say I "miss" it Bob.

Team building meeting = Find out who the hell is not on board with the program and get rid of the cancer before it gets you! This is always done everytime a new administrator is brought in. Got to get rid of the sh#theads who will never let you implement your program or style. :)

I organized this for one of our teambuilders before...

Have all the people write down a couple of things that no co-worker knows about them.

Put a 1 or a couple of entries per person on a piece of paper. Have your team find out who is "that" person is.

That way... They'll atleast meet each other during the week in casual conversation, etc. (unless they cheat off of others answers).

Then at the team builder display the answers to all the weirdos collectively (have them guess openly together first) and everyone has a blast.
You can even have the weirdo give a short explanation of their weirdness. It was a blast.
