Chiefs looking into using the 3-4 D...
Rest of the article is here
•CHIEFS WON’T CHANGE DEFENSIVE SYSTEM: The Chiefs are loading up at linebacker, having signed free agents Donnie Edwards and Napoleon Harris. They are still short at defensive tackle, even after adding Alfonso Boone and re-signing Ron Edwards and Jimmy Wilkerson. It’s easy to speculate that the Chiefs are planning to switch to the 3-4 alignment as their base defense. They will still rely mainly on the Cover 2 system favored by coach Herm Edwards but might use the 3-4 as a change of pace. “We can get into that, do it as a different look,” Edwards said. Donnie Edwards and Harris will join Derrick Johnson as the starting linebackers. Edwards excels in pass coverage, Johnson is a good pass rusher, and Harris is fast, allowing him to cover plenty of ground quickly. All are capable of playing in the nickel defense, which presents an interesting issue for the Chiefs. Which one comes out on passing downs? Or will the Chiefs use all three? “That’s a good problem to have,” defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said. “The good thing is that we’ve got the players. The tough thing is figuring out how to keep them all on the field.” The Chiefs are planning to load up at defensive tackle in the draft next month, selecting one and perhaps two players at the position. |
This really isn't news, the Chiefs have used the 3-4 as a special package from time to time in the past.
I think we should keep Edwards and Johnson on the field in the nickel. |
I wish we ran the 3-4 as our base defense. You can still run a cover 2, you just got to modify it a little bit.
Look at all of the defenses that run a 3-4 outside of CLE. They are all good defenses. DAL,BAL,NYJ,PIT,SD,SF are all good defenses. SF is obviously the worst one on that list but they are emerging. I just tried to list off the top of my head, there could be more teams that run it. The only problem is that we invested in the past few seasons in running a 4-3 that we just now can't just deal away with Allen and Hali when they are coming into their own in this league. If we didn't have those 2 players I would do this.... Trade for DET DT Rogers and draft Adam Carriker in the first round. Then move Wilkerson to DE. Or I do think that if Allen bulked up 15-20lbs he could play a 3-4 DE. |
I wish people would get over their obsession with the 3-4. We don't have the personnel to run it, and it's not some magic bullet. Only three of the top 10 defenses from a year ago ran the 3-4.

I personally hate the 3-4 defense. Give me four down linemen any day.
|
Four on Dline works best at least on 1-2 down.
Run stoppers up front. |

I think we actually have the personnel now to run the 3-4.
Start Hali and Wilkerson at DE. Defensive ends in 3-4 defenses are usually undersized DT's anyway, and Wilkerson and Hali have both been DT's before. Edwards and Boone could rotate at NT. Usually the 3-4 NT isn't really a playmaker, he's more of a clogger. Then you could finally put Bell and Donnie back at ILB where they've played before in the 3-4. DJ would be one OLB, and start the season with Harris at the other OLB. When Allen comes back from suspension, put him at OLB or "falcon" and move Harris back to ILB if Bell still sucks. |
This is kind of interesting. The title of your thread contradicts the tagline on the article.
