I am starting to have high hopes for this Minnis kid.

How many think that he may take Cats job? Or will they put him in the slot?

In any event, I am hearing more positive feedback on him than any other player.

He's a player - no doubt about it. He has speed, runs precise routes and has great hands. Like I said a while back: this guy was an absolute STEAL. :)

Alphaman 05-17-2001 04:01 PM

I don't think he has the size to be anything but a slot receiver. I do expect him to be very productive in that role however.

He'll be in the slot, I'd imagine. It looks like that was what he was drafted for, but who knows, maybe he could jump to #2. He was impressive at the public mini-camp a few weeks ago. Right now, though, I think it's a safe bet to lock him into the #3 WR spot early in the season (bad news for Horne...).

I like that we have these nearly-daily "conversations" with Dick Vermeil. I wonder if it's his doing or if it's a PR-department thing...

Alphaman, I wouldn't bet against him because of his size. He's 6'1, and I'd wager he won't stay at 170 pounds forever. They'll probably work to add at least 10-15 pounds to his frame so he won't be as easy to jam at the line.

HC_Chief 05-17-2001 04:17 PM

Here we go with the f(*%ing SIZE issue again. WTF?

<table width=100% border=0 cellpadding=1><tr><td><b>WR</td><td><b>Height</td><td><b>Weight</td></tr><tr><td>'Snoop' Minnis</td><td>6-1</td><td>171</td></tr><tr><td>Az-Zahir Hakim</td><td>5-10</td><td>178</td></tr><tr><td>Isaac Bruce</td><td>6-0</td><td>188</td></tr><tr><td>Marvin Harrison</td><td>6-0</td><td>181</td></tr><tr><td>Wayne Chrebet</td><td>5-10</td><td>188</td></tr><tr><td>Joey Galloway</td><td>5-11</td><td>188</td></tr></table>

You telling me thjese others are 'too small' too? (Or did we just forget to tell them?)

No offense Alphaman - just getting sick of hearing FANS say 'oh he's too small to do this or that'. Pigeon-holing players due to size - what their height/weight/40 time is/etc. is EXACTLY why our team hasn't won a SB in 30 years. Our dumbass coaching staffs believed all the paper bullsh*t - rather than paying attention to how the players actually <i>perform</i>!

Otter 05-17-2001 04:24 PM

I think the only credible "size" issue has do with his size as in "bulk". He's 10 pounds lighter than his closest doppleganger Marvin Harrison.

Can he take the beatings?

Besides that, I agree in saying the size issue is pretty weak.

HC_Chief 05-17-2001 04:50 PM

Heh - sorry, bit of a rant there. Like I said, getting tired of the "he's too small to do ____" argument. Size deficiencies - be it height or weight - can be overcome. Especially if the player has good speed and instincts. Minnis is tall and thin - but fast and has excellent technique. He was awesome at FSU - and looked awesome at the mini-camp. I am really impressed by this draft choice - I think he has the potential to become our #1 receiver!

BIG_DADDY 05-17-2001 04:59 PM

That's exciting. This offense is built for speed and this kid certainly has that. We haven't had too many fasssst receivers. I think Horn was the last one. I am really getting amped to see what this O can do. You guys are really lucky to be able to check out the practices.

BIG DADDY

Will just have to jones until pre-season. Feels like an eternity away still.

NaptownChief 05-17-2001 05:42 PM

I have said on a couple occassions that I think Minnis will have Cat's job by mid-season if not earlier...I base that on two factors. First I think Minnis has the skills, but as much of a factor is Cat's lack of polish....

As for the size issue...I don't buy into that either. Guys of all sizes get hurt on a regular basis, the media just loved to point it out more often when the guy is small...

Some of the shortest football lifespans have typically been the "big" guys...ie Barry Foster, Christian Okoye, Ickie Woods, John Settle, Natrone Means....The only big back in recent memory to last more than 5 years has been Bettis and he has spent as much time in the trainers room as anyone...

Alphaman 05-17-2001 09:11 PM

HC_Chief,

You made my point for me. Minnis is giving up close to 20 pounds to most of those guys. The guy he isn't (Az-Hakim) plays the slot.

Don't get me wrong, Minnis will be very productive for us. But I don't think he'll be able to handle the jams of the physical corners. That's why he'll thrive in the slot where he won't get jammed.

Why is everyone so down on Morris? Yes he tailed at the end of last season, but he did show talent. He also missed most of camp and played through an injury. He definitely needs to produce this season. He needs to gain some polish. This is where Joiner and Saunders earn their paychecks.

Morris=Deer in the Headlights

SlyMo had too much placed at his feet after his 3 TD performance against SD. He looked like he was trying to hurry his routes and run without the ball many of the times. The one thing that bothered me more so than the aforementioned was the fumbled balls. There weren't many, but enough to recognize that he has got to put it away in the open field.

If Sly get's good coaching (and I think the addition of Saunders will do worderful things for our receivers), I think he can have a great season as the #2 receiver. I suspect that he will get pushed significantly early on by Minnis. Should be fun to watch.

Sly Playing catchup to Minnis?

Because of Vermeil's statement the other day that Sly does not have that fast twitch response and needs to develop it, and because of the following Vermeil quote, I think Vermeil expects Minnis to start at the beggining of the season.

quote:
"He has the ability to separate. He can play the game fast. I think that's very important to be able to do and we drafted him knowing he had that ability rather than trying to develop that ability in somebody that's already here. That doesn't mean they don't have it but we've got to develop it."

Also, this quote from Charlie Joiner is very telling:

"He has confidence in himself, and that's going to give him a chance to make it," wide-receivers coach Charlie Joiner said. "His transition won't be as difficult as it is for some, because Florida State uses most of the terminology we use. He should be able to handle it because his school has prepared him well for this."

So, what do you think? Will Minnis be starting along side Alexander while Sly catches up?

This is going to be a great preseason!!

:)

NaptownChief 05-18-2001 07:35 AM

BowTie,

That is exactly my thoughts...Reading Dick ForMeal's comment sure screamed out to me that the Cat will be sliding down the depth chart pretty quickly...

Cat is a good athlete but his routes and instincts were very disappointing. You compare Cat, that we took in the 2nd half of the 1st round last year to Reggie Wayne(Colts 1st rounder) and in terms of instincts, hands and polish it is like comparing a Pop Warner WR to Cris Carter....

Sly's situation looks like a mirror image to M.Ricks situation in SD...They are very similar except Ricks is taller and has a couple years more experience...Wouldn't be surprised to see him move around Morris either...

htismaqe 05-18-2001 09:14 AM

I don't see anyone sliding ahead of Morris. You guys are reading way too much into Vermeil's comments. Morris needs to improve, and he will.

Minnis is ideally suited to the slot, in fact he will excel there. There's no way Ricks is moving up over anybody. He might not even survive June 1.

NaptownChief 05-18-2001 10:33 AM

htismaqe,

We will see soon enough....Just remember, the Bolts fans were saying all the things about Ricks after his first season that you are saying about Morris...

I am definitely not saying you are wrong, cause I like everyone else am only guessing what might come of Sly but the reality is it would not be a stretch to see a 1st round receiver fall out of favor and slide down the depth chart...Just ask one of the Donkey fans about Marcus Nash....
:D
