If you neede proof Peter King is an idiot...

He at least has problems figuring football scores. These scores aren't impossible but someone who "knows" football ought to have a better feel for the likely scores.

Houston Texans (2-1) at Atlanta Falcons (0-3)

Falcons want the Michael Vick nightmare to recede into the memory banks in Atlanta. Not so fast. Former Vick protege Matt Schaub comes to town and puts three touchdown passes on the board, opening the scab again.
Texans 26, Falcons 16
Where are the Texans going to get 5 points? 3 TD's means 21, are they going to get a safety and a FG too?

Quote:

St. Louis Rams (0-3) at Dallas Cowboys (3-0)

Many amazing things about this young season. The fact that Marc Bulger has two touchdown passes in his first 109 passes is very high on that list.
Cowboys 30, Rams 24
The Cowboys are going to get 3 TDs and 3 FGs? Seems less than likely, why not put 31 that's 4 TDs and a FG. That seems a bit more likely.

Quote:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) at Carolina Panthers (2-1)

I love it when great pass-rushers who have no sacks through three games -- Julius Peppers, in this case -- say sacks are overrated and come in bunches and it's all about pressure. When great pass-rushers make gazillions because they lead the league in sacks, I never hear them demean the importance of sacks, do you?
Panthers 19, Buccaneers 16
19 points means either 2 TDs, a safety and a FG or 1 TD and 4 FGs. Not impossible but unlikely.

Kansas City Chiefs (1-2) at San Diego Chargers (1-2)

Two things I'm fairly sure of as a seasoned NFL observer: LaDainian Tomlinson is not washed up, number one. (Breaking news! King says Tomlinson will rise from the dead!) Two: The Kansas City win last week portends nothing for the future except that the Chiefs won't go winless.
Chargers 33, Chiefs 3
Another one that makes you wonder if PK knows how to count. 4 TDs means 28, where is the other 5 pts going to come from? Or does he really think they'll score 3 TDs and 4 FGs?

Why predict scores that seem very unlikely? He could have rounded them to fit the way football is really scored and the predictions wouldn't seem as stupid (at least not because of the final scores).

He said Matt Schaub is going to throw 3 touchdowns. Schaub plays for the Texans.

The Chargers may very well win this game, but they won't hang 33 points on this defense.

Very true. Sorry for the WPI moment. I fixed it.

I think he's counting on some missed extra points in those games, Mr. pikesome.

3 games where 5 pts needs to be made up? You're right, it might be missed PAs but that's some pretty shoddy prognosticating to call scores that require statistically unlikely things to be right.

That's what I was thinking...

DFB 09-27-2007 12:53 PM

2 TDs, 4 FGs = 26 pts. Very likely.

Nah, I think he just BSed his final score predictions. I generally do it too, though I don't pick uncommon football numbers like 19 and 25 and 33.

Those aren't uncommon football numbers. I just think people in general always think in terms of TDs and 7 pts. Can't forget FGs.

tk13 09-27-2007 12:58 PM

Schaub will throw three TD's, they add a FG, and then Lance Berkman will hit a 2 run homer.

Either that, or he's the best dang prognosticator in 3000 years. If he nails these predictions, he'll be recognized as the next Edgar Cayce and we can finally find out where the heck Atlantis really is.

Everyone thinks of TDs and FGs when they pick their scores. What they don't factor in are safeties, two point conversions, and missed extra points.

3 TDs and 4 FGs? If you believe SD can score on us like that (and they might, who knows) I would think calling 31 (4 TDs 1FG) or 35 (5 TDs) is a better guess.

I guess it just underscores the belief that these predictions are based on as much anal yankage as real knowledge.
