Training Camp Returning to KC?

At least Vermeil thinks it is a good idea.

As a fan, Bob Dole was a little irritated when the Chiefs abandoned Liberty in favor of River Falls and thinks it would be great if they at least returned to a location a bit closer to home. The Chiefs' contract with UW-River Falls expires this year, but it appears the Chiefs are negotiating a renewal.

Apparently Vermeil looked around at SMSU in February, but some unnamed folks within the organization are concerned about the heat in Missouri this time of year.

Doesn't K State have a fancy schmancy indoor practice facility?

You can find the complete article here.

SMSU? You're kidding, right? The field there is absolutely terrible. Having played a few "games" there (read: drunken fraternity flag football) there is no way they would risk injury due to a horrible field.

I would love to see them return to Liberty ... it's ony a 10 minute drive from my house and I could easily give everyone updates.

~~Would love a chance to watch a training camp.

Bob Dole 07-24-2001 06:21 AM

Bob Dole was too loopy to notice the fields at SMS, and has no reason to believe they'd still be in the same condition, anyway. Bob Dole sort of assumed John Q. had added facilities or something.

The field at SMS has recently been replaced with the same type of surface that MU has. Nice field and a monumental upgrade from the horrific turf that was at that stadium. I find it hard to believe that SMS has the type of facilities that would be adequate for the Chiefs. Also, referencing the heat concerns, remember that the Rams train in Illinois which is just as hot as the weather here. I don't think Vermeil is worried about heat....heck, high school and college teams practice in it.

Mark M 07-24-2001 08:06 AM

They finally replaced the John Q. U.—er—I mean the SMSU field, eh?

I wonder if that will help the team win any more games ... ;)

I see why the team practices in WI (weather), but one would think that the travel involved during preseason, even for home games, would make them reconsider.

MM
~~Would like TC to be closer to home.

To Bob Dole, it didn't read like Vermeil was the one overly concerned about the heat. In fact, he said:

Quote:

"There are some disadvantages. I've always believed that if you're going to fight in the South Pacific, you need to train in the South Pacific.
It's some other unnamed source or sources that seem to hold the heat as a primary concern.

Bob Dole's hope is that the coach is given the opportunity to overrule whoever wants it in River Falls and the team moves back closer to home.

JimNasium 07-24-2001 08:18 AM

Mark M - Every year it's the same old song and dance and the team ends up 5-6. And, of course, you always have an enthusiastic crowd of about 1,500 rooting them on! :o

Senator Dole - Yeah, someone up the food chain has a boner for Wisconsin. Must like dairy products.

Didn't Brock Middlebrook train in Gautemala, or Haiti, of some shiite like that?

Bob Dole 07-24-2001 10:27 AM

Bob Dole remembers them, Rod. Bob Dole also remembers the POS head coach sitting under an umbrella with a water cooler while he shouted out orders. Fargin bastige. (Anyone know where Lynn Erickson lives now? Bob Dole would like to give him a piece of Bob Dole's mind...)

Middlebrook claimed to have trained somewhere mountainous...just can't remember where it was.

Training in Wisconsin because of the HEAT?

Jesus Christ...

It's currently 87 degrees in KC, it's 82 in River Falls...

This is the year 2001 and this is the MIDWEST. The temperature difference between KC and Wisconsin, in the summer, is negligible at best.

Utter crap...

keg in kc 07-24-2001 02:13 PM

Parker, it's been 95 to 100 degrees here in KC for a week and a half (or longer) with heat indexes anywhere from 105 to 115. Today's the exception, not the rule.

keg in kc 07-24-2001 02:20 PM

Parker, it's been 95 to 100 with heat indexes up to 118 for a few weeks. 87 is the exception, not the rule (and it feels really, really nice...).

KS Smitty 07-24-2001 03:29 PM

Another comment of the heat indices...they are "in the shade" temps, if you're in the full sun add 10 to 15 degrees. That said I would like to see TC closer to home too. Don't the c'boys train in Liberty TX?
