"Dick Curl instrumental in my career"

So says NYG defensive coordinator and Atlanta head coaching candidate Steve Spagnuolo.

Halfway across the country, the 1958 graduate of Chester High School who recommended Spagnuolo to Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, former Clippers quarterback Dick Curl, knew it was only a matter of time until the Giants became familiar with their new defense.

Curl is assistant to the head coach/quarterbacks coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. He grew up in Chester, played quarterback on scholarship at the University of Richmond and soon after began a coaching career still going strong at age 67. Curl was head coach of the 1998 World Bowl runnerup Frankfurt Galaxy. His defensive coordinator was Spagnuolo.

Even back then Curl watched Spagnuolo bounce back when things weren’t going great, helping convince him to hang in long enough to reap the fruits of his labor.

“He was just a tremendous guy to work with and work for,” Spagnuolo said. “We ended up winning some games and going to the World Bowl, so that was fun, too. He’s a tremendous friend, a very close friend and I really love him and his wife Bev. He’s been very instrumental in my career.”

So what? He gave some dude a break. Big deal. Doesn't mean he's qualified to coach quarterbacks.

I just hope he made a good recommendation about the O-line coach, who also coached with Curl in Europe.

I think the article is interesting only insofar as it speaks to his ability to pick and recommend coaches, not his ability to coach QBs.

Sounds like the title of a porn star's autobiography.
