Whither Dan Williams?

Vermiel says that Williams will start practicing soon.

Whoopee...

Am I alone on the island when I say I hope Dan Williams plays backup this season and is sent packing next season?

I am willing to concede that Williams has more potential than Martin or even Browning, if we are talking only about the DT position. But Williams has been a consistent disappointment to me. I would rather dump him at the end of the season and draft a run-stuffing, middle-collapsing DT fresh out of collage.

Of course, I have to admit that the holdout did nothing to endear Williams to either the Fan or the Enigneer…

For this season, I think we need him, and I hope his foot really is fixed. Finally.

And when I say "need" him, I'm speaking in terms of numbers, plus the amount he's counting against the cap. His @ss had better be on the damn field.

For next year, well, I'll cross that bridge after watching him this season.

I thought he played very well last season, actually, and he did manage to play over 80% of our defensive snaps, if what I heard on the radio is to be believed. But if he looks lazy (although I will say I never thought he looked lazy on the field on Sundays), doesn't work during the week and seems to be a cancer in any way, shape or form...

Bye.

I'm not sure I like the idea of having a player who can't practice during the week on the roster, either, so if he's that gimpy again this season, we need to cut our losses (and I think we will no matter what happens - I believe he's on the roster because we financially cannot afford to cut him).

I like Dan, but I think this is his last year as a Chief. I think he is a better player than Chester, and I like the idea for Browning and Martin in the middle. I think those two know they are not the sack masters of this team and know there job is to stop the run. If we have two DTs that will stop the run, and allow Patton or Maz to move from side to side, I will be a happy Chiefs fan once again.

Did "Big Boy" come from Washington?

Nope, Denver

They should dump him this year...he has the potential to be a great DL but it seems he's always hurt...I don't know, I don't think he's dogging it, but what good does it do if he is always hurt?

I will take back my statement and say, they should dump him this year unless he's ready to play by the Rams game...I would still feel better with him in the middle but not if he's hurt and plays inconsistently....if that's the case, I'd rather see Martin play full time so he can develope with Browning as the year progresses.

But Gaz, et al....you have to love what you see and hear about Clemons...I think he's poised to have a career year...he looked awesome on that sack the other night and all the news out of camp indicates he's having the best TC of all the D players...if we have a solid interior so the DE don't have to worry so much about the run...imagine what a monster tandem Hicks and Clemons could be....:D drooling just thinking about it...QB crushing

If nothing else Marty likes to win the battles in the trenches during preseason games. Our DTs won those battles this past Sunday so I'm not concerned so much about DW. If he can get healthy and contribute great but if he can't so what. Wouldn't his cap hit be spread over the next two years if we released now.

We can't dump him Joe.

Salary cap...

One other thing -- don't forget Owens.

I said something like this on another thread:

If he stays healthy all season, Duane Clemons is going to have a monster season. If he doesn't stay healthy, Rich Owens is going to have a monster season.

In Clemons, Hicks and Owens, I believe we have one of the best trios of DE's in the NFL, and they're going to put a hurting on QBs and RBs.

We had a thread on the cap consequences of releasing Williams a week or two ago. I'll see if I can't find it.

I didn't realize the cap hit would be so severe...you are right, we can't dump him...of course the Coaches aren't going to come right out and say he's dogging it, so all I can do is believe them when I hear his injury is not healing the way it should...I truely believe he wants to play and not just collect a check...but I'd like to see him play before I turn 50 which BTW is still many years away....

If Williams is healthy, Martin, Browning, Clemons, Owens, Hicks could form one of teh best DLs in the game...

I'm definitely not missing Fatster McCholesterolton.

VAChief 08-14-2001 03:16 PM

It appears to me Dan has some incentive to put together a solid season...if he doesn't he is gone and becomes less marketable to other teams...we are stuck with his salary for this year regardless...might as well let him earn his freedom...I have never seen reason to question his effort when he is on the field, so if he gets healthy why not use him...if he is one of the best front four...use him...he plays hard...I'll worry about the next year later...

58Forever 08-14-2001 03:19 PM

If he plays hard, and unhurt and has a good year, you won't have to worry about next year....:)

HC_Chief 08-14-2001 03:35 PM

You know, I bet the KC front office really wanted to cut Dan Williams this season... along with Chester, but they just couldn't absorb that kind of cap hit - at least not all of it in ONE season.

I would not be surprised to see him get the boot at the end of this season - regardless of his play.

keg in kc 08-14-2001 03:42 PM

I don't know, HC, I could see them waiting until June 1 to try and divide it over two years. That would make it a lighter hit against next year's cap instead of what probably still amounts to a brutal cap hit. We'll probably be pretty active next offseason, and taking a 6 or 7 or however much it is (I don't know...) hit for DW might not be the best way to start. That would neutralize, by itself, all of the cap savings we got by releasing Gray, George, Grbac and the Digester this year.

I wish I knew his actual numbers -- I don't like guessing on this stuff.

And, yeah, I've gotten the feeling they'd have liked to cut him this year if they could have.
