Chiefs Update 11/12
November 12, 2008 - Bob Gretz
From the Truman Sports Complex

The spinning roster wheel stopped at defensive end for the Chiefs on Wednesday. Rookie Brian Johnston went to the injured reserve list with a calf injury and is done for the remainder of the season. To take his spot on the roster, the Chiefs signed veteran DE Jason Babin (left) off the waiver wire.

Babin (6-3, 260) was a former first-round draft choice of the Houston Texans in 2004 out of Western Michigan University. He’s played in 47 NFL games with 22 starts for the Texans and Seattle, with 13 sacks and 147 total tackles. He joined the Seahawks last season in a trade from the Texans for safety Michael Boulware, but played in just two games. This season, he played in two games for the Seahawks with one tackle, but was released on September 17.

His best NFL game was the final contest of the 2005 season, when he had 13 tackles and two sacks for the Texans against San Francisco.

At Western Michigan, Babin finished his college career with 38 sacks while playing in 47 games for the Broncos. He also had 29 tackles, eight forced fumbles and three catches on offense for 35 yards. Babin is a native of Paw Paw, Michigan.

In other roster shuffling, Larry Johnson was returned to the active roster and RB Jackie Battle was released and re-signed to the practice squad. Also added to the practice squad was QB Ingle Martin, who was released late last week to make room for safety Oliver Celestin.

The Chiefs also signed LB Kyle Shotwell to the practice squad. Shotwell (6-0, 232) played his college football at Cal Poly-SLO where he won the Buck Buchanan Award as the Division 1-AA defensive player of the year in 2006. Since entering the NFL as a college free agent with Oakland in ‘07, he’s been with five different teams: Raiders, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Minnesota and Tampa Bay.

To make room for those practice squad additions, the Chiefs released RB Omar Cuff, CB Michael Grant and DE Jermaine McGhee.

Also for those scoring at home, Wallace Gilberry is now wearing No. 92, not No. 94 which he wore last Sunday in San Diego. Babin was issued No. 94.

On the injury front, five players did not take part in practice on Wednesday: CB Brandon Flowers, DE Tamba Hali, LB Derrick Johnson, G Adrian Jones and LB Pat Thomas. Flowers, Johnson and Thomas are hamstrings, while Hali and Jones have ankle injuries. Right now it seems highly doubtful any of those five will play against New Orleans.

Limited in their Wednesday practice participation were RB Jamaal Charles, S Jarrad Page and CB Patrick Surtain. Amazingly, De Turk McBride took a full load of practice work, including being part of the first-team defense. Just a few days ago there was talk in the Chiefs hallways that McBride may be headed to the injured-reserve list because of a shoulder problem. But McBride said Wednesday that he plans to play this Sunday.

Wayne Smith is taking most of the snaps at RG with the No. 1 offense; he stepped in and replaced Jones in the Chargers game. Rookie T Barry Richardson is also getting some practice snaps at guard.

Herm Edwards said his linebacker depth chart for this game has Rocky Boiman and Donnie Edwards starting at the outside positions with rookie Wes Dacus at middle linebacker. The backups would be Demorrio Williams at both outside spots and Boilman in the middle.

Larry Johnson shared the backfield snaps on the first team offense with Charles and Dantrell Savage.

The team worked for two hours outside, in cold and windy conditions.

"Signed" off the waiver wire?

"Wayne" Smith?

JFC, Gretz. Hire an editor.

Either Babin's a waiver claim, meaning you pick up his existing contract or he's a free agent. Considering he was cut in September, he's a free agent.

And BTW, it's WADE Smith.

Gretz is busy, running his own gig now...... but typical media. spelling errors aren't held against you.

It's REAL tough to go to KCChiefs.com/The Team/Roster.

He's a lazy ****.

His Super Power is that he's impervious to Boils.

I am concerned with Pat, DJ, and Flowers being hamstrings. I think that, per NFL regulations, you need pretty much a whole human in order to wear the proper uniform. If they are hamstrings then they'd be too small.

"I've never heard of half of these guys, and the ones I do know are way past their primes."

"Most of these guys never had a prime."

Richardson is getting some snaps at RG, eh? That sounds favorable... I really want to see what he can do out there.

We really need to do something to shore up the right side.

D. Williams must really be in the dog house. I thought this guy was supposed to be decent, but he can't even beat out Boiman at OLB. He must be worhtless to us at this point.

InChiefsHeaven 11-13-2008 07:06 AM

Jeeez...we are friggin' decimated. I mean, I know there are a ton of injuries, but when you really look at it, it's got to be one of the worst seasons injury-wise for an NFL team...

TEX 11-13-2008 07:18 AM

Babin BLOWS. He's a "Tweener" and not good at either position. The guy was horrible in Houston. I'd be surprised if he's even on the rister next year.

Red Beans 11-13-2008 07:28 AM

I think the reason williams isn't playing is because he only plays outside backer. I imagine we'll see him on passings downs rushing the passer some...
