Did Savage deserve to be fired?

I don't understand his firing. I thought he was doing a good job in Cleveland. Sure this year went bad, but his body of work has been good in Cleveland. I remember last year(2007), when everyone was applauding him for the draft. How he moved back in to the first round to get Quinn. The roster also seems to have the most talent in years. I don't believe this years results are his fault. In fact, I wouldn't mind bringing him in here as an assistant to the new GM, much like Kuharich was under Carl.

Definitely in agreement with you... I think that people are just lumping Savage in with the rest of the failure of this year for the Browns, but they have a lot of talent on the roster thanks to his moves.

He's not a people person. I'm not sure he would do well working as an assistant. He seems to be an all or nothing type guy.

love to have savage in the organization

as an assistant GM would be fantastic until we see want kind of legs this "not a people person" has to it.

I tend to evaluate less on the results of the moment and more on the underlying fundamentals. I've thought Gruden was a good coach since his first year in Oakland and his less than desired results in Tampa the last few years haven't changed that opinion. I'm not a huge Thigpen fan because I don't think his fundamentals and accuracy are ever going to get him to the franchise level. I didn't like Herm since he led the Jets to a victory over SD in the playoffs a few years ago. I signed off Pennington and his rag arm immediately after his last year with the Jets -- this year hasn't changed that opinion.

I haven't followed Cleveland that closely, but I'd give Savage a chance in KC. It's not like he is Matt Millan where every move he makes leaves you wondering if he's trying to screw things up. If I was the owner in Cleveland and thought his player moves were good, I'd give him another chance to find a good coach.

It's got some pretty good legs to it.

When I googled Phil Savage "people person" I got back a bunch of stuff about his bad email and then this from Jamal Lewis:

First off, let me say I'm excited to be a member of the Cleveland Browns.

I plan to do everything I can to help the team win and entertain the fans, and hopefully -- despite the past - you will all welcome me with open arms.

A big part of me coming to the Browns had to do with my prior relationship with Phil Savage.

I first met Phil when I talked to him at the NFL Combine in 2000. At the time he was the director of college scouting for the Ravens.

What impressed me off the bat about Phil is that he's a people person. During my time with the Ravens, he'd ask me what I needed and what I wanted. He really wanted to get my input on how to make the team better. A player likes when a GM shows he's really interested in our opinions. It made an impression on me.

Carl Peterson was a "people" person

Your proof is irrefutable. Savage paid a player a lot of money to come to Cleveland and the player said nice things about the guy that just gave him millions in the form of a signing bonus. He must be a great guy that easy to work for and with. Forget the power struggle that existed his first year with Collins that led to Collins resigning. Forget the crap with Winslow, the email, and his comments this year when things started to go poorly with the head coach he retained:

''My responsibility is the 53-man roster, and then it's Romeo and the rest of the coaching staff's decision how to utilize the 45 players who are dressed on Sunday. If I'm going to get involved in those decisions, then I may as well put a headset on and double my salary.''
