HOFers Playing Now: Runningbacks

Edgerrin James - He’s 11th on the all time list right now. I think all the top 10 guys will eventually get in (Bettis and Curtis Martin were accumulators). Doesn’t have a ring. I think he’ll get in, but even the top guy isn’t a slam dunk.
LaDanian Tomlinson – IN. He is/was a star
Fred Taylor - I’m not seeing it. For example, just 1 probowl. Could take another couple seasons for this accumulator to limp into the top 10.
Warrick Dunn - No
Jamal Lewis - No
Shaun Alexander - No
Clinton Portis – Probably not. He could finish top 10 in yardage and had some star runs. Being a dumb ass and not having a ring will work against him. He’s never recaptured the magic of the Donks years.
Ahman Green - No
Thomas Jones - No
Ricky Williams - No
Deuce McAllister - No
Rudi Johnson - No
Brian Westbrook – Probably not, definitely needs a ring to stand a chance.
Larry Johnson - No
Michael Pittman - No
Steven Jackson – He’s only 25 so he still has time to really rack up the numbers.
Willis McGahee - No
Willie Parker - No
Frank Gore - No

Some other guys are in the top 250, but no one worth mentioning.

I'm seeing maybe as few as 1 or 2. Probably not more than 4 under any circumstance.

If Deuce never had that first season ending injury his whole career would have been different. He was a HOF back for sure up until then...

Fred Taylor deserves consideration but probably won't get in. He is good enough to be a HOFer (rare mix of size, speed, talent), but durability damaged the first half of his career. I think he has been seriously under-rated during his career.

KCChiefsMan 01-05-2009 08:10 PM

I think Fred Taylor has a solid chance. He's been productive for a long time. Also Jamal Lewis and his 2,000 yd season with a Superbowl win could get him there.

Portis will always have his gay gold belt.

Ebolapox 01-05-2009 08:11 PM

yeah, I'm not really seeing any other than tomlinson. the law of averages says there HAS to be more than one hall of fame guy in this generation though...

kcxiv 01-05-2009 08:13 PM

Tomlinson, Taylor are in. Taylor may take a few years, but imo he will get in. I think Portis will when its all said and done with. If he has a few more decent years, he may get it.

KCChiefsMan 01-05-2009 08:13 PM

I think LT is the only "shoe-in"

cdcox 01-05-2009 08:14 PM

The running game just isn't as important as it was, teams are spreading the carries around, the top RBs are stars for a year or two then become average. All these kill chances for RBs to become HOFers. Also follows the trend of RB being the easiest position to replace. Very few exciting runners at any given time.

cdcox 01-05-2009 08:18 PM

AP of course hasn't cracked the top 250 yet, but he certainly deserves watching. He's a star and is piling up the stats.

Ebolapox 01-05-2009 08:24 PM

I think that, if we have this conversation in the future, the only guys I could see being possibilities are adrian peterson (if he stays healthy), stephen jackson (if he continues to produce in the lou), ronnie brown (not likely, but weirder things have happened), and I could see deangelo williams maybe catching fire (if he doesn't have to share carries with jon stewart for the rest of his career). most of these aren't likely--it looks like the running back position has turned into one such that only one guy a generation will get the nod from the hall.

RJ 01-05-2009 08:25 PM

I don't see it for James.

LT almost for certain.

I could see Westbrook with a couple more good seasons and a ring.

Looking further down the road, I could certainly see that for Adrian Peterson.....insert usual caveats here.
