Has anyone been to Charlotte?

Were pretty much being forced to move there due to the shrinking auto industry. I was just wondering if anyone was from there on this board, or had been there. Is it a nice area? How are the schools? Whats the nightlife like? You know things like that.

My son lives downtown Charlotte and my daughter lives on Lake Norman just north of the city. Charlotte is one of the nicest, cleanest cities I've ever been to. It is a great city, very young and alive. A lot of money in Charlotte with the banks. Southeast Charlotte is the nice area to look for a home. Depending on how old you are, you should like it a lot. I've actually considered leaving south Florida and moving there.

You want to live either north or South of town, preferably north. You don't want your kids to have to be a part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system considering their problems. Actually i would look in the Cornelius/Mooresville area since the kids will go to Iredell County schools which aren't bad.

I can't tell you about the nightlife because when I lived there I was married so I didn't get out much.

One thing you should know about Charlotte is that they have the McGuire Nuclear plant nearby....if you live within a mile of that, one of the things they give you is the iodine pills to take in case of a nuclear accident.

Charlotte, at one time, was the second largest banking center in the US behind New York. With all the banking industry problems it may have changed status.

They have both Lake Norman and Lake Wylie nearby so there are plenty of opportunites for boating and fishing. You are only 5 to 6 hours from Myrtle Beach, 4 hours from Charleston, and 6 hours from Hilton Head. Living in Charlotte you are also only 3 hours from a few ski resorts in the Smokies, 3 hours from Gatlinburg, and 3 1/2 hours from Asheville/Biltmore Estates. They have Paramount Carowinds which is located just a few miles south of Charlotte on the NC-SC border.

There is plenty of good shopping as they have 3 nice malls, especially the new Mall Complex north of town.

Is your company moving you there or are you moving yourself?

Bojangles is awesome.

I passed through the airport there a few months ago. (Coincidentally, I was on the same flight and airline that crashed in the Hudson.) The airport has not just one, but two Nascar stores.

The problem with living on Lake Norman is that it is getting pretty crowded....plus depending on where you live you have the aforementioned issue with being close to a Nuclear Plant.

I would differ on my opinion of it being one of the nicest and cleanest cities...people are nice depending on which part of town you live in. And it looks pretty dirty once you get away from the Interstates.

A lot of the money used to be with the banks...now I would bet that the biggest accounting of money comes from Lowes and NASCAR-related income.

If I had won that project three months later, I would've been swimming in the Hudson.

I was considering an Amazon cruise a while back, and the ship that did the cruise hit an iceberg and sank on a different leg to the Antarctic. Sometimes I feel like I'm living a charmed life.

FloridaMan88 01-18-2009 10:23 PM

I've been there a few times... my wife is from there.

It is a boring city. Basically a bunch of banks/bankers and the entire city shutdowns at 10:00 every night.

Thanks a lot man. Actually my wife is getting a promotion and transfer at her work, oddly she is transferring from a car plant to an air conditoner plant but it will get her out of automotive so that's good.
