Schefter reporting Cowher tops our list of candidates, Shanahan will NOT be in KC..

Shanahan isn’t a candidate in Kansas City

Despite reports running rampant that Kansas City is negotiating with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan they are not, sources said Friday.

The Chiefs never have made any contact with Shahanan, never. And there have been no contract negotiations.

So unless people I have known for years are wrong, Shanahan is not going to be the next coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.

While football has speculated on the Chiefs coaching search the past few weeks, now Kansas City actually gets to commence it.

One NFL source said a name near or at the top of the Chiefs list is former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who has been adamant that he will not coach this season. Still, the source said the Chiefs are interested in Cowher, though it is uncertain whether they would be able to entice him to come out of retirement.

Also on the Chiefs list is Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who used to work on the staff of Bill Parcells, the father-in-law of Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli. If the Chiefs wanted to hire Haley, they would have to wait until after the Super Bowl to make the move.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni also is thought to be on the Chiefs list of potential candidates. Pasqualoni had a down season in Miami, but is highly respected around the league and used to work with Pioli for two seasons at Syracuse.

Some around the league believe that Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt has a strong feeling for Kansas City offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, though Pioli would have to sign off on the hire and some doubt that he would.

However it works, the coaching carousel keeps spinning.

And we now have 11 teams that have changed head coaches, more than any other season in NFL history. The changes included two Super-Bowl winning coaches that were fired, two Super-Bowl winning coaches that retired, and seven other changes.

610 is saying that Shanahan's agent told Schefter that there are no negotiations going on and that Shanahan is not coming to Kansas City. Vehement about it.

That's probably EXACTLY what Shanahan's agent told Schefter.

Doesn't mean he told him the truth.

If Clark/Scott asked him to keep quiet, what's he going to do, spill the beans?

What about the Rooney Rule? Do we get fined if we don't go through the right process, lose a draft pick, what?

Lying would not be keeping quiet. 'No comment' would be keeping quiet.

The individual they were interviewing said that Schefter has a 15 year relationship with the agent and that to date he's never mislead him.

In any case, not saying yea or nay, just reporting what I heard...

DaWolf 01-23-2009 04:54 PM

Well, either Schefter is right, or Mortensen is right.

Both have been wrong before, so it's possible neither will be right...

He's going down like the captain of the titanic isn't he.

Mr. Kotter 01-23-2009 04:54 PM

That's my gut. I could live with Shanny though.

We have no idea who has or will be interviewed.

Coach 01-23-2009 04:55 PM

Well, didn't Schefter reported that Herm was gonna stay?

That's probably the safest bet.

Although it's interesting to me that the 810 guys are treating it as a done deal due to some kind of inside information that Jack Harry purportedly has.

Mort was right about the Chiefs making a decision regarding Herm by the end of the day today... he's been right so far.

Probably a loophole where interviewing Herm satisfied this requirement.

No comment is basically giving the rumor legs.

Or Pioli could bring in Bob the black janitor and interview him before the new coach gets here.
