Multiple deaths reported in Ala. shooting spree
 

SAMSON, Ala. -

Multiple people were shot and killed Tuesday in south Alabama during a shooting spree that spanned two communities and ended in a Geneva-area parking lot.

Various news agencies were reporting conflicting accounts of how many people were killed. The Web site of The Dothan Eagle newspaper reported as many as 10 people. WPMI, the NBC affiliate in Mobile, Ala., reported 12 dead.

Samson Police Chief Gary Weeks said the suspect was shot and killed. But it is unclear whether it was self-inflicted or whether he was shot by police near the Reliable Metal Products company outside Geneva.

Geneva is near the Florida border in southeast Alabama. It has population about 4,400, and neighboring Samson about 2,000.

Geneva County Coroner Max Motley told the Dothan Eagle that he was called to the Big Little Store on West Main Street in Samson, where he found the body of a woman. Other victims, he told the newspaper, are at a home off of Highway 52.

The FBI bureau in Mobile sent an agent to assist the Geneva County sheriff's office and local police, a spokeswoman for the FBI told CNN. A message left by The Associated Press with the FBI was not immediately returned.

Reliable Metal Products makes grills and vents for heating and AC systems, mainly for hotels. A call to a person who answered the phone at the plant said no one could talk about the shooting.

The towns of Geneva and Samson are about 11 miles apart, and roughly 30 miles south of Forth Rucker.
