When you quit your job do not quote Office Space!!!

So my roommates cousin, who lives next to us, got arrested yesterday because at work he got pissed off and said "I hate this place, I wish I could burn this mother down" so he spent the last couple of nights in jail and they let him out today. He's a tatoo artist and comes off kind of creepy I guess, but overall he is a pretty nice guy and is an intelligent person. Certainly not threatening in any way. But I guess he just quoted the movie Office Space when he got in a fight with his boss or something and said "I'd like to burn this place down." Well, I guess he is looking at prison time and they are pressing charges against him.

A guy like him doesn't need to be in prison, he needs to get a good lawyer. But I guess they passed some law about this several years ago because of "terrorism" and he made a "terrorist threat." I think this whole situation is BS, it was stupid of him to say that, but he has no criminal record in the past 20 years and was pissed off and said something he shouldn't have said. There is absolutely no chance that he would have followed through and actually do it.

So I guess the moral is when you quit your job don't say "I'm gonna set this place on fire"

And no, this isn't about me. It's about my neighbor who is a pretty good guy and never bothers anybody. I'd hate to see a decent person go to prison for 2 years for this BS.

Huh. I'd think they'd have a hard time proving that constitutes a "terrorist threat" in court, but I'm no lawyer.

Just tell him to kick someone's ass the first day, or become someone's bitch. Then everything will be all right.

seriously though, they are trying to put him in prison for 2 years. That's some BS.

So he will be going to a pound me in the ass prison..

Seriously though, I don't see why the company is going on with the charges..

His best bet is to get the PR machine working for him in the news and pressure on the company.. Was he a mega idiot? yes.. But he should not go to prison for it.. Tell him to contact the news station..

If you have ever heard interviews about people who actually do burn places down is about the same things you are saying about your friend.

The moral is that you don't say anything to anyone in a public arena, particularly a place of employment. It is irrelevant if you are "kidding around". People take this sh*t seriously now and it has nothing to do with 911, but rather the history of "work-related deaths/threats"

I haven't worked in an office building in the past 15 years that didn't have some sort of security measure- a fucking card to get into the building, the same card to get past the elevator, into your own floor, into your own hallway, into your own area, meeting room, etc...

Your friend might be intelligent, but he wasn't smart.

I do hope the best for him. He should get the best lawyer he can find and use friends such as yourself to tell the court that his statement was blown out of proportion and taken out of context. Unfortunately, with all the nuthooks out there today, your testimony may not be enough to salvage what was already said.

Best of luck.

It would have been funny if like in the movie airplane just as he said "I'll burn this place to the ground" someone dropped a watermelon from the ceiling and it smashed down all over the desk. This is what I'm seeing.
