Rookie head coaches

Very rough breakdown

Cable and Singletary were interim head coaches last year.

Jim Caldwell: Colts last season 12-4
this season 9-0

Todd Haley: Chiefs last season 2-14
this season went 0-5 then 2-2

Josh McDaniels: Broncos last season 8-8
this season went 6-0 then 0-3

Raheem Morris: Bucs last season 9-7
this season 0-7 then 1-1
started rookie QB game 8

Rex Ryan: Jets last season 9-7
this season went 3-0 then 1-5
started rookie QB game 1

Jim Schwartz: Lions last season 0-16
this season went 0-2 then 1-6
started rookie QB game 1

Steve Spagnuolo: Rams last season 2-14
this season went 0-7 then 1-1

Caldwell really doesn't count.

Mr. Arrowhead 11-17-2009 12:35 PM

funny, the coaches with the most talent are the ones succeeding

I think you have Spags and Schwartz mixed up.

Also look at the sophmore toasts of last year, they're struggling a bit more in the 2nd year (5-4 for both Smith and Harbaugh).

You also look at the Lions, Rams, and Chiefs, and you see all three teams are in virtually the same place they were last year despite new leadership on all three teams. This would seem to indicate that all three teams have the same issue (years of horrible drafts by the previous administrations) and that there were not enough players available to turn any team in this state around in one offseason...

Of course, you could look at it another way and say that Haley's had the best last four games except for the Colts and his team is showing the most improvement win-wise.

But, of course, most won't.

thanks for the heads up

That's how I took it. The Chiefs are going in the right direction. It's just not happening as fast as some want it. And after the last 3 years, I can agree.

I'd think the best comparison to make with Haley would be Chucky.

He's emotional, easily pissed off, offensive minded, and pulls no punches.

Problem is that Gruden was as vocal with his happy on the sidelines with players as he was with his venom. Haley isn't...

No offense, Brad, but Bullpucky.

I was sitting 14 rows up at the Washington game and Haley was over praising guys as they came off the field for good plays, talking up guys as much as yelling at them for making bonehead plays and in general, pretty damn in control of himself throughout the game. He specifically sought Bowe out several times to congratulate him for a great catch as well as pumping up defenders after a good play.

Maybe, since I was sitting behind him, he was more expressive facing toward the cameras, but when he turned to face the bench, he was a lot more in control than most people give him credit.

The problem I see is with the head coaches on a losing streak like Ryan and McDaniels if he loses this week. I think Ryan will be fine.

Haley hasn't really had much to be happy about. The two wins were as ugly as they come. He was pretty excited when they tied the Dallas game up. There just hasn't been much to celebrate...

Get out of here with those facts! Haley is a raving lunatic who does nothing but scream and berate his players - the 'Planet told me so!

Caldwell is really hard to judge... he's essentially Switzer for the Colts.

2008: 5-4 at this point, finished 12-5
2007: started 7-0, were 7-2 at this point
2006: 9-0 at this point
2005: 13-0 start

Last year, 2008, they struggled early... but since 2005, this team through 9 games each of those 5 years is a combined 39-6. Three 9-0 starts, one 7-2 and a 5-4.

Caldwell is more figure head with this team than actual coach, but the system works for them.

Thanks for posting though, it's good to see that Denver made the best decision at HC so far...

Just need two wins to equal last year and two CHiefs games on the schedule.
