HOF question - Reeves vs Dungy
I saw a poll recently that asked the question of whether or not either of these coaches was a "Hall of Fame" coach. Tony Dungy was an overwhelming "YES" and Reeves was extremely borderline.
You can compare their bodies of work at www.profootballreference.com What do you guys think? |
Dungy.
-10 fewer years and only one less Division Title. -10 fewer years about only 51 fewer games. -Superbowl ring. -Only had double digit losses in one season his entire career. -Twice as many wins as losses. |
For some reason, Marv Levy is in, so I don't see why Reeves shouldn't be.
|
I would probably lean towards Reeves...A lot longer career, went to 4 Super Bowls with 2 different teams, a lot more wins.
Sure, Dungy won one SB, and has a better winning percentage but I think longevity with a long record of winning teams trumps that. Barely. |

Dan Reeves didn't do too much after Denver, aside from a few good seasons and the SB appearance... but, overall he still has a very solid body of work and like someone else said, Levy is in the HOF. I'm not suggesting that Dungy isn't qualified, but if he's a lock now... they better put in Jimmy Johnson pretty fast with his record of 80 and 64 with 2 titles. Hell, Barry Switzer was 64-40 in his 4 years with a SB title. Switzer did the same thing Dungy did ... took over a very talented team. |
I don't think either one of them belong in the HOF. Dungy had a great QB and is a feel good story, but that shouldn't give him the ticket in. Reeves was a hard worker, for a long time, but not enough IMO.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why Levy made it, but he is an extremely smart ****er, so he managed to politic the right people. |
I wouldn't put either one of them in.
Bud Grant also seems to be a question mark. No championships, no major innovations, 21st in regular season win %, 12th in total wins. I just don't see it. |
Dungy is a fruad. Peyton should have won more titles if he had a better HC.
|
Dungy's black he's going in....

I'd vote for Reeves over Dungy, but I think a coach has to be legendary to get in. Neither of those coaches is legendary.

Reeves couldn't co-exist with one of the 3 best QBs in the history of the game. No HOF.
|
Neither one.
|
If either gets in, they would be riding in on their QB's talent. ...although there is something to be said for the ability to get out of the way so a player's talent can shine.
