Question about fouls in basketball

I understand that a shooting foul will be called on a defensive player if he makes contact with an offensive player while in the act of shooting.

Now, how in the hell is it legal for an offensive player to fake a shot, then launch himself sideways into the defending player while "putting up a shot" and get the call? No ****ing different than a soccer player flopping to get a call.

I'm half watching the TT vs MU game and a TT player just pulled that off. Got 3 free throws for jumping 4 feet to his left to be fouled by the defensive player.

Yeah they usually don't call anything on that, but if the defenders feet were planted, it could be an offensive foul.

It's a terrible rule, but that's the way it's called.

I don't understand basketball at all. The rules aren't enforced and there don't seem to be any plays that I can tell.

There used to be something called "travel" that was called once upon a time.

It's bullshit, and I despise players who make it a habit to initiate contact when they shoot (Tyler Hansbrough & Patrick Sparks to name a couple). I wish they would at least be more consistent at not calling anything and at most call a technical foul on the shooter (only when it's over the top, of course)... that might put a stop to it.

Have you never watched basketball before?

And how the hell is that a terrible rule?

Reggie Miller made a pretty good career for himself doing that.

Yeah, I don't watch basketball until there are really good wing specials at the local tavern in March.

BTW, this is a dumb thread, N00B!

Is the team offering the most money on offense or defense in this scenario?

It's a flop for free points. How can that possibly be allowed?

Well I mean you learn to play defense to avoid it as much as possible. It's the offensive players job to get position to where it's easier to accomplish. It's not like "OMG WE CAN JUST DO THAT FREE THING THIS POSSESSION" and you get 2 free throws every single possession. If it was that easy you could get anyone you wanted in foul trouble as soon as you wanted. It's just a part of the game.

That's why basketball sucks.
