Notes: Parade All-American and highly sought-after recruit who also played basketball as a Mississippi prep. Following his high school career, became embroiled in a highly publicized eligibility saga. Powe, who is dyslexic and suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), committed to Ole Miss as part of the 2005 recruiting class but failed to qualify and attended Hargrave Military Academy (Va.). Was denied by the NCAA three times in a three-year span, all the while maintaining his commitment to the Rebels despite two coaching changes. At one point, he re-enrolled in high school courses and worked as a jailer. Was granted a partial waiver in ’07 that allowed him to attend Ole Miss and receive financial aid but not play football. Had surgery in October ’07 to repair a fractured left wrist. After four years off the field, weight ballooned to 387 pounds, but he got down to the 340 range when he finally debuted for the Rebels in ’08 as a junior. Saw action in 12 games and recorded eight tackles, 3½ tackles for loss and 1½ sacks with one interception. Had the wrist operated on again in May ’09 before starting 10-of-13 games at nose tackle in the fall, producing 34-12-3 with a forced fumble. Also received two carries for zero yards. Started all 12 games at nose tackle in ’10 and recorded 27-8½-2½ with one batted pass and a forced fumble. Team captain.

Positives: Widebody with sheer mass and girth to anchor. Stout at the point and can handle a double-team. Quick get-off and flashes ability to re-establish the line of scrimmage. Plays with a load in his hands and can push the pocket when his battery is charged. Fairly light on his feet and quick in short areas for a big man. Strong tackler. Loves football and brings energy to a defensive line.

Negatives: Lacks ideal height. Inconsistent. Limited foot speed and range to close down the line or operate outside a phone booth. Needs to improve his coordination and play with better base and knee bend. Plays top-heavy. Can do a better job protecting his legs. Struggles to feel pressure. Limited pass-rush value. Tires quickly. Weight has fluctuated and has a big, soft midsection that affects his balance, ease of movement and conditioning. Suspect character and football aptitude.

Summary: Has a true NT skill set but will have to allay concerns about an overwhelming number of troublesome traits, including marginal stamina and on-field inconsistency. Academic struggles were scrutinized upon arrival in Oxford and bring concerns about his mental capacity to digest and execute an NFL playbook. At his best is a big-bellied, powerful, two-down run stuffer but flashes too infrequently and will require a patient coaching staff, veteran mentorship and a structured team environment to have a chance for success.

NFL projection: Sixth- to seventh-round pick.

Projected 6th or 7th round.

That shocks me.

BigRock 04-29-2011 08:23 PM

Every year there's some guy who people are dying to trade up for by the time round 3 starts, and every year that guy's still there in round 5.

Sofa King 04-29-2011 08:25 PM

That would be awesome.

Reerun_KC 04-29-2011 08:26 PM

If the Chiefs chose not to draft him, you should get another 30-60 day vacation...

Shocks you because you feel it's too high, or because you think he should go undrafted?

Cam Thomas is better than Powe.:harumph:

Let's not forget Ian Williams. At this point IF we draft a NT, it's between Powe and Williams, and neither are anything special. Even if we ignore the NT position, this draft is fantastic.
