Best route from Omaha to KC

Has anyone had to make this trip lately? With all of the flooding, what's the best route from Omaha to KC?

Ask Mike Aviles....

Pretty sure my parents took 75 to Nebraska City, then 67 south after that when they went to St. Joe a few weeks ago. Not 100% sure on that, though.

29 is closed?

I read something on NDOR's website back in June about construction and lane closures on US 75. So when I went down to Nzoner's I took I-29S to the Glenwood exit, then US 34E to US 71S all the way to St Joe. Added about 40 min to the trip.

Uh, yeah, it's closed @ Rock Port MO, Hamburg IA, and then again just north of Council Bluffs.

Hey Omaha, I made the trip last week.

There are a couple of routes, no basic difference, I took one going South, and the other coming home North. You'd go I-29 South to Hwy 34, Glenwood, IA exit East (about 20 miles) to Hwy 59 South at Emerson, IA. Then Hwy 59 South all the way to Craig, Missouri and get back on I-29 South and continue on. I heard from others that Hwy 275 is open (even though it's posted 'Road Closed, Local Traffic Only' between Rock Port, Missouri and Hamburg, IA. So, on the way home, I took I-29 North all the way to Rock Port. Then, just a bit East towards Rock Port, picked up Hwy 275 North. Hwy 275 goes to Hwy 34, West on Highway 34 to I-29 North. Either route is about the same, narrow, 2-lane roads, with Hwy 59 having quite a bit of curves in Missouri.

Yup and been that way for a month.

I wouldn't go all the way to Hwy 71. That adds quite a bit to the distance.

Thought about the 59 route when we went, but since it was the nearest highway to I 29 I was worried about heavier traffic. The 71 route took me through a town called Clearmont, is that where you're from?

IMO it won't be opened until late 2011/early 2012. After the water receeds the highway will probably need to be inspected. I think that could take a couple of months.

Yep. Farm boy from rural Clearmont. Left in 1982 to join the Air Force. All my family still in that area.
