Would a little Stanzi vs Cassel competition help?
Some people(myself as one) believe that Scott Pioli has avoided bringing in any real competition for Matt Cassel. In part, because a quarterback controversy seldom does a team any good and also because Cassel has a history of losing virtually every QB competition in which he's involved.
I watch Cassel play now and i'm not sure which he's more concerned about, completing the pass or avoiding a hit by the pass rusher. I wonder whether or not a little QB competition would encourage him to overcome his fear and get him to commit a little more to completing the passes and stop looking at the pass rush and dancing around. Stanzi vs Cassel ... help or hurt? |
Competition is Always good thing.

Stanzi.

If you want a competition, it would probably have to come from outside. I don't think you're going to find it with Palko or Stanzi. As far as Cassel's perceived "fear", my guess is there's a lot going on with him coaching-wise, with Zorn. Either way, I wouldn't overreact based on preseason performance, whether you have a negative or a positive impression of the player in question, be it Cassel or Stanzi or anyone else.

I don't think anyting can polish that turd.

I want cassel determine to deliver the ball whether he gets smashed or not. He needs to be more afraid of losing his job then getting stomped. |
I just think that "IF" we had not had the lock out this year, Stanzi would have had time to compete for the starting job. This is not a normal year and all the rookies are left playing catch up in such a short time. I don't think Haley wants to send Stanzi in the fire just yet.
I'm all for Stanzi taking over the starting duties, I just want him be as prepared as possible for greater success. I think Palko can do a better job than Cassel, but I don't want him being starter, I want Stanzi to earn the job out right. |
Right now, it would probably hurt us.
A real competition means that the snaps with the 1s is split and Cassel needs every single one of them. Stanzi doesnt even know the playbook yet and needs time to learn it before he should be allowed to take snaps with the 1s. This time next year, that competition should be in full swing unless we not only get back to the playoffs, but win a game once there. JMO |
I don't think anyone realizes how vanilla we've treated the preseason so far...
it's not going to be a barometer for the season... so lets judge the "QB competition" once we see Matt play a regular season game... if we decide to lose to the Bills week 1 and Matt plays like nutsack...consider me sold (because if we can't beat that shit team we're ****ed) |
If I were GM I think I would try and make a play for Jimmy Clausen since the Panthers appear to be set on going with Newton. If he could be had for a reasonable value I would bring him in, groom him and see if he has high quality starter ability about him.

it would help,but it won`t happen,matts,piolis boy/he can do no wrong,lol

Nice when you can do that but Clausen is only 1 year in the league and he came out a year early so he would be a rookie this year had he stayed in school...not like we would be going after somebody long in the tooth. If you can take advantage of a situation and get good value does it really matter how it came about? I'm guessing Saints fans would rather have Brees via SD than some run of the mill QB that they drafted. Be nice to have a Aaron Rodgers type of situation but I would take it any way I could get it. |
Playoff teams don't have QB competitions a week before the season starts. If you want to completely blow up this season (and probably next season), then sure, go for it.
