Mel Gibson is a single man once again, but his divorce will reportedly cost him upwards of $400 million -- making it the biggest divorce payout in Hollywood history!

It was decided in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday that after 30 years of marriage, seven children and no prenuptial agreement, Gibson's ex, Robyn Moore, was entitled to half of everything the actor earned during their marriage. His fortune was once estimated by the Los Angeles Business Journal to be around $850 million.

The two met in the late 1970s and split in April 2009, citing irreconcilable differences, although they have remained on good terms, for the sake of their children. "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," they said in a joint statement at the time.
I just don't understand how this happens. How is she entitled to anything?

Why wouldn't she? There was no prenup and California is a community property state.

Quote:

In a community property jurisdiction, most property acquired during the marriage (except for gifts or inheritances) is owned jointly by both spouses and is divided upon divorce, annulment or death. Joint ownership is automatically presumed by law in the absence of specific evidence that would point to a contrary conclusion for a particular piece of property.[4] The community property system is usually justified by the idea that such joint ownership recognizes the theoretically equal contributions of both spouses to the creation and operation of the family unit.[5]

They have established residence in the state. Their rules apply. California enforces their own laws. I don't think they care what the rules are in whatever country they got married in.

The state is worried about their cut first.

well, they were together 30 years. At least it's not the usual hot chick marries old rich guy and takes everything after he dies or half after a few years of marriage.

What is he worth now though?? Saying he was once worth something is BS.. Half of whatever the two of them have right now is what it should be for 30years..

This. I'm sure she's spent her fair share.
