Sources: Orson Charles to enter draft

Georgia tight end Orson Charles will announce Wednesday that he is forgoing his final season of college eligibility and will enter April's NFL draft, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

"It's time to move on to the next part of my life," Charles said. "There is the injury risk. There is the ability to help my family. The time is right to chase my dream."

Charles, a junior from Tampa, was named All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation and American Football Coaches Association after catching 45 passes for 574 yards with five touchdowns.

He also was a finalist for the John Mackey Award as the country's top tight end and was named All-SEC.

The Bulldogs are expected to lose only one defensive starter from this past season's team, cornerback Brandon Boykin. Georgia will be losing offensive linemen Ben Jones, Justin Anderson and Cordy Glenn and fullback Bruce Figgins.

Junior linebacker Cornelius Washington and safety Bacarri Rambo are considering whether to enter the NFL draft, but they're believed to be leaning toward playing one more season for the Bulldogs, sources told ESPN.com.

Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones already has said he will return to Georgia this season.

Chris Low covers the SEC for ESPN.com. Mark Schlabach covers college sports for ESPN.com.
This guy is a big, pass-catching TE who is a good, if not great, blocker. Wouldn't mind grabbing him in the 4th round if he's still around.

I'd be all for it. We need a TE somewhere between the 3rd and 5th rounds. A good one.

Moeaki is a nice piece and all...but Pope is not.

Charles is a HORRIBLE blocker and can't be a bit over 6'2".

I'd much rather have a guy with a higher catch radius.

I don't know shit about the guy. I just want another good TE, whomever that may be

Oh, the next Kris Wilson.

Coby Fleener is probably the best well rounded TE.

Dwayne Allen is going to be the first one taken in the late first or early second.

After him its pretty much Fleener and Eifert, if Eifert declares, in the 2nd to 3rd. The Rest are meh.

EDIT: Eifert is going back for his senior year... so ya.

I know you don't like him, and I respect that, but I still think a late-rounder on Green is worth it.

EDIT: Fleener is the best all-around prospect, yes.

Probably looking at Egnew/Green in the 4th/5th although I wouldn't be excited with either in the 4th.

Green is nothing more than a 1 inch taller, but much slower, Baldwin right now. He doesn't have the size to block in the NFL and he doesn't have the speed to play WR.

He is raw, and like hits said, the kid can't block.

Unfortunately, this is a weak TE class that doesn't contain a basketball-skills converted to football type guy.

Charles is shorter than I'd prefer. He may go in round 3 but I'd take a flier in round 4 or 5 if he slipped.

Part of the rawness is that Mark Richt is not very good at developing players. He can recruit talent yet Georgia perennially under performs.

He runs anywhere from 4.5 to 4.6. And he's a legit 6'6", he's more than 1 inch taller than Baldwin. His arms are also VERY long.

He put on almost 40 pounds in 4 years at ULL without losing any speed, his coaches say he can continue to do that.

His ceiling is quite possible a 4.6 speed, 250-lb TE with a very wide catch radius.

That's worth a 4th or 5th rounder.

Seriously... where the hell do you get your information? He runs 4.65-4.7.

Pretty much every site lists him as an estimated 4.65 +/- .10, which puts him in the 4.55-4.75 range. That's just plain stupid typing by me - it meant to say "he runs anywhere from a 4.55 to 4.65". And of course, that's merely potential - he COULD run faster but he probably won't. There's absolutely no way he runs lower than 4.55, obviously.

FYI, almost all of the sites are now listing him as 236, so it will be interesting what he looks like in February.

the Talking Can 01-11-2012 03:20 PM

he has nice hands, but isn't really great in any one area...almost like a halfback a la big foot....kind of meh really
