Why all the recent interest in Zombies and the Zombie Apocalypse?

I really don't understand all the recent interest in zombies and the zombie apocalypse. Does anyone have an explanation behind this cultural phenomenon?

we all gonna die? and turn into zombies?

cabletech94 07-07-2012 10:43 AM

but seriously, it's the same thing that vampires were a few years back.
some movie, book, whatever comes out, everyone tries to copy everyone else.
looks like it's zombie time.

while personally i love the walking dead (series in print AND tv), i've always been a fan of the genre.
loved the romero's dawn of the dead remake. the updated mall setting, all hope lost. i don't know. i just dig it.

Well, Vampires and Werewolves are probably at their most popular point as well, so it seems to be the whole monster genre.

Just like any other fad, really. It'd be tough to trace a true "origin" for it given that zombies have been in human culture forever. However, I'd say there's some combination of 1) interest in the supernatural fueled by Twilight and the like, 2) a handful of successful movies specifically about zombies in the past few years (I Am Legend, Zombieland, etc.) and 3) a handful of events started around the country to toy with the idea (Zombie Crawls, etc.).

I actually read a pretty good essay on that. It contains some spoilers for Walking Dead, so I will spoiler tag it:

Spoiler!

There are tons of writings on this, though, if you're interested.

It is not recent, it has been going on since Romero's movies.. Same with vampires, you are just now noticing it is the difference..

Zombies kick ass, that's why.

He's referring to the huge mainstream and pop cultural uptick in zombies (which has definitely occurred) not zombies in general (which obviosuly predate Romero).

A slow buildup of Zombie video games, mixed with a growing popularity for guns.
