Question for guitarists and band members

1. Is there a good free site out there for finding guitar tabs?

2. My son (13) and some of his friends want to start a band and we're trying to get a decent playlist together for them. What are some good songs/bands to start out with? Most have some experience but not playing together. I'm guessing Ramones would be one. Looking for songs not too difficult to learn but enjoyable to listen and move to. Kind of rock to punk rock type music. Something like "What I Like About You", "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", maybe some Greenday. Any suggestions?

Ultimate-guitar.com. Sometimes the tab isn't 100%. Accurate but gets close. Its usually submitted by people, so not necessarily a one to one match from a tab book at times. Ad they have a large catalogue of music.

Green day would be easy. All power chords. ACDC is good. They use a lot of standard chords in the 1st position.

STP is good, though depending on their level there is some parts a beginner may struggle with in terms of rhythm and chord structure. Same with AIC.
Tesla has some good ones that are good starter songs.

When he has interest in learning more than tablature, this site is fantastic: http://www.justinguitar.com/

a lot of of songs on Metallica Black, Load & Reload are farily simple too. (Not sure if they're into that). earlier Metcallica might be biting off more than they can chew.

and as silly as it may sound, Dio has a lot of cool riffs and a lot of songs are easy to play.

....they could break it out, and people would think they wrote it.....since I'm sure most of their 'fans' wouldn't have a clue who Dio is. lol.
Holy Diver is a good album ; Gypsy, Straight Through the Heart, Caught in the Middle. whole album is good IMO.

assuming they're into that sort of stuff / would be interested etc.
However, they'd have to tune down a full step, or sing and octave lower lol. Ronnie could belt it out.

It has been said but just to confirm ultimate-guitar is a good one.

Oh and I don't think guitar hero counts as experience :)

Anything Boston has pretty cool rythym and riffs that are pretty simple and still sound good. Foreplay/long time and More Than A Feeling come to mind.

Tabs are cool, watching someone play it on youtube is really good or ideas how to Jazz it up or Dumb it down. It's like the tabs and your left hand get good, but your hand to strum is the last thing that comes along. Be Patient it could be awhile before they know songs up and down and on comfortable enough to just jam with.

yep; I think people would be surprised to find out just how many cool songs are out there that are basically the same chord structure, but at a different timing or tempo.

Great advice, thanks, again.

The most important thing is just time, if think you get the chops needed just listening play to a song once, you may be wrong. I sat there for hours changing my chord hands between C and G and I still kinda suck. Although my song "Keep chiefsplanet free" became sensation.
