Why did Gale Sayers spurn the Chiefs in 1965?
This has probably been a topic of a thread before, but I've not seen it. I was thinking about Sayers yesterday... and wondering why he didn't come to KC?

Especially, when you consider that he went to KU. |
We offered him $2.95 and a bottle of Coke
That's what the Bell brothers got, 2 bucks and some coke.

Kansas City was a more racist city than Chicago at that time.
Probably because the NFL was viewed as the superior league to the upstart AFL.
He figured being black would've hurt him here and Chicago would've helped. Which is funny him going to KU and all already.

If you have a chance to be a star in the NFL, you take it. |

Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Curly Culp, Otis Taylor... among others played here and loved it. In fact, most of them made KC their home and are still active in the community. |
He got offended when Carl cussed at him so he walked out and signed with the Bears the next day.

If you're a top prospect and offered a full ride to be a starter at Tulane but a partial full ride to be a starter at Alabama, where do you go?
Because the AFL was a junior league at the time.
He said himself that he thought that the AFL would collapse and cease to exist in a few years when he was drafted so he picked Chicago.
Further proof that most players don't know shit.
Because the movie "Brian's Song" never would have been made you dumbass :)
